Intro to Sumi-E painting

The Shelby Regional Arts Council will hold a 6-week class on “Introduction to Sumi-E Painting” from Feb. 12 thru March 18.

This is a beginner/introductory course to learn Sumi-e painting which is ink painting on rice paper. Learn the various brushes, shades of ink, basic strokes and how to mount your painting for framing. Cost is $75 for SRAC members / $85 non-members. Time is 1 — 4 p.m. on Mondays for 6 weeks. Acting class

Shelby County Community Theatre is offering an Adult Shakespeare acting class that will begin on Feb. 15 and run on Thursdays for six weeks until March 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. The class will be led by Dr. Jack Wann and is open to participants aged 16 and up at all levels of experience. Shelby County Community Theatre

Shelby County Community Theatre announces its upcoming Mainstage production of Our Town, by Thornton Wilder. Early African Culture & Traditions

Carnegie Library Center, Feb. 17 from 11 a.m. — noon. Dr. James-Etta Goodloe Reed and Jerry Lancaster will discuss early African cultures and traditions that predate European and American enslavement and some that have been preserved through time and persecution to be still practiced today.

Prepare to Care Workshop

February 23, Prepare to Care Workshop Series at the Shelby County Public Library in collaboration with AARP and the UofL Trager Institute. Programs will be held at the Carnegie Library Center.Are you caring or preparing to care for someone who is 60 or over? Caregiving may begin with taking someone to medical appointments, shopping or cleaning for them, etc. No matter where you are in the journey of family caregiving—just beginning to anticipate a need, helping coordinate a big move or taking care of a family member full time—having a good framework to help guide both you and your loved one will make the process easier. Shelby County Public Library Seed Library opens on Monday, Feb. 26 during regular library hours

We are happy to announce that the Seed Library is back for its second year! Seeds are free and will be available throughout the growing season or while supplies last. The collection consists of a large variety of open-pollinated and non-GMO vegetables, herbs and flowers that Bentley Seeds, Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. and Seed Savers Exchange generously donated. Patrons are limited to 5 seed packets once a week. A limited selection of seeds will also be available on the bookmobile.{/div}

SCHS SBDM meetings

Shelby County SBDM meetings for 2024 are March 7, April 11, May 2 and June 6. School-year meeting times are 3:45 p.m. Summer meeting times are 10 a.m. Special meetings to be determined.

Important Conversation

Having Important Conversations (Advance Care Planning) at the library is on March 8. Justin Magnuson from the UofL Trager Institute will bring everything together and provide tips and strategies about how you can have conversations with the person you are caring for about advance care planning, legal issues and end of life wishes.

Spring FestivalThe Shelbyville Spring Festival is March 9 from 10 a.m. — 4 p.m. at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. This is an arts & crafts festival. Artisans will be inside Floral Hall. Spring Arts & Crafts Fair

There will be a Spring Arts & Crafts Fair to benefit the 2024 Crusade for Children on Saturday, March 23 from 9 a.m. — 4 p.m. at the Waddy Fire Dept., 135 Chester Dare Rd. A 10 x 10 rental booth space is $30.

Limited electric available at additional $10 per space. Inside space is first come, first served.

Dogwood Artisan Showcase

The Shelbyville Dogwood Artisan Showcase will be at the Shelby County Fairgrounds April 20 from 10 a.m. — 4 p.m. Event by ArtSpark Productions.

Yarn Bee

The Shelby County Public Library will host a Yarn Bee the second Tuesday of each month | 2 — 3 p.m. | Carnegie Library Center.

If you love knitting and crocheting, then the Yarn Bee is for you!

The purpose of the Yarn Bee is to meet with friends who share your interest, relax as they work on their latest knitting or crochet project, share ideas, and help each other. Program will be held in the Carnegie Library Center.

Family Trees

Are you interested in finding out more about your family tree? Visit the Kentucky Room on the lowest level of the Shelby County Public Library (on the same level as the Children’s/Youth Department) and discover available genealogy and history resources. Make an appointment with the library’s resident genealogist, Sarahbeth, for one-on-one assistance by either calling the library, 633-3803, or emailing her at sarahbethf@scplibrary.net. Her work hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You may “meet” fascinating ancestors you never knew you had.

Test kits available

Shelby, Spencer, Henry and Trimble County health deapartments have COVID-19 home tests kits available. Stop by the local department between 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday to have tests on hand in case symptoms appear.

Veterans Night

Veterans Rural Outreach hosts Thursday Veterans Night each week at Veteran’s Village Community Center, 506 Bradshaw St. in Shelbyville for veterans and their families at 6 p.m. Food and fellowship for all veterans and those who support them. Call 502-220-9387 with questions.

North Central District Health Department and the SUDS coalition collaborated with community partners to help get free Narcan and fentanyl test strip bundles to those in need. Volunteers needed

Multi Purpose Community Action Agency is in need of volunteers to deliver meals to homebound seniors. Meals are delivered on Mondays and Wednesdays. It is usually about a two-hour commitment, and the volunteer must provide their own transportation. Most of the meal delivery is within the Shelbyville city limits. Contact Sabrina or Pat at the senior center, 502-633-2218, on Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Adults over 60 can join MPCAA for lunch, socialization, and fun activities at the senior center. A Loving Choice Pregnancy Resource Center, provides help/hope to women and families facing or have experienced a crisis/unplanned pregnancy. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday at 711 Henry Clay St., behind Operation Care on Main Street.
