  • SCHS track season kicks off...

The SCHS track and field season is set to begin with a home meet Tuesday. The first meet will give both the Rocket and Lady Rocket squads a chance to see just what they have.

While the Lady Rockets look to rebuild this year with a young squad, the boys' team hopes to build on last season's success while trying to stake claim to the state's toughest region.

The boys return several pieces from one of their best teams in the last few years. However, the injury bug has already bitten the Rockets before the season has even started.

  • Rockets grab 8th Region Title

The Shelby County boys' basketball team trailed Gallatin County for 7 minutes and 54 seconds of the fourth quarter in the 8th Region Championship game Wednesday at Gallatin County.

But Coty Minnis cleaned up a missed shot and drew a foul on the play with just 6 seconds remaining. Minnis calmly stepped to the line and drained the foul shot, giving the Rockets a 49-48 lead.

When Gallatin County's three-point attempt missed, the Shelby County celebration engulfed the court.

The rebound and three-point play was Minnis' second inside the final 20 seconds.

  • Rockets advance to 8th Region...

The Shelby County boys' basketball team never lost the lead, but the Rockets could not put South Oldham away until late in the fourth quarter of the 8th Region semifinal game Tuesday. The Rockets hit 9 of 12 free throws in the final 1:25 to seal a 71-62 win and advance to tonight's championship game. Shelby County will face Gallatin County in the finals. The Bearcats beat North Oldham 72-56 in the second semifinal game Tuesday.

  • Champs get their rings

Earl Adkins and his teammates from the University of Kentucky's 1958 NCAA championship basketball team have waited a long time for their championship rings -- 50 years to be exact.

Adkins, who lives in Shelbyville, said when the team won the title the players received only wristwatches. Adkins' watch has long since stopped working.

And now that the championship ring is on his hand, Adkins said he is glad to have a visible symbol of the team's accomplishment and to no longer have to explain to folks why he doesn't have a ring.

  • 8th Region Tournaments...

The 8th Region basketball tournaments have been rescheduled due to the weather.

The girls' tournament at Shelby County High School will have semifinal games Sunday. Walton-Verona will play Anderson County at 3 p.m., and South Oldham will face Simon Kenton in the second game at 4:45 p.m. The finals will be Monday at 7 p.m.

The 8th Region Boy's Tournament was also pushed back one day to avoid conflict with the girls' tournament.

  • Rockets hold off Owen County, 55...

The Shelby County boys' basketball team made just enough plays down the stretch to top Owen County 55-52 in the opening round of the 8th Region Tournament at Henry County High School Wednesday.

Coty Minnis hit a lay-in and finished off an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Rockets ahead 50-42 with 2:30 to play, and Shelby County (21-8) hit five of nine free throws, three by Tim Sanford, over the final 1:30 to hold on for the win.

  • Rockets to face South Oldham in...

The Shelby County boys' basketball team will meet South Oldham for the third time this season, but this one will no doubt be the biggest.

The teams will play Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the 8th Region Tournament semifinals at Henry County High School with a shot at Tuesday's championship on the line.

    South Oldham (18-13) upset Simon Kenton 60-51 in Wednesday's second first-round match-up.

The Dragons held a 13-point lead before Simon Kenton hit three straight three-pointers to close within four points, 50-46, with about three minutes to play.

  • Lady Rockets upset in region...

South Oldham's Jordann McGuffin hit a lay-up with 8.9 seconds to play to give the Lady Dragons a 37-36 upset win over Shelby County in the 8th Region Tournament first round Tuesday at Shelby County High School.

It looked as though the Lady Rockets would advance as they led 36-33, but South cut the lead to one with a short jumper, and then a rough exchange near midcourt resulted in South's Lauren Jones scooping up a loose ball and hitting a streaking McGuffin for the game's final points.

  • Boys' 8th Region is wide...

The boys' 8th Region Basketball Tournament seems to be missing something this year: a clear-cut favorite.

Gallatin County (22-7), Shelby County (20-8) and Anderson County (20-5) lead the way, but South Oldham and their bevy of outside sharp-shooters and North Oldham, a surprising 19-8, are capable of stringing good games together. And, despite a 14-15 record, a young Simon Kenton team is coming together and playing its best basketball of the season.

While it may seem that the Rockets got the best draw they could have, SCHS head coach Mike Clark isn't buying it.

  • Rockets roll over Anderson for...

The Shelby County boys' basketball team avenged an early January loss to Anderson County, steamrolling the Bearcats en route to a 73-61 to win the 30th District crown Saturday at Spencer County.

Trailing 8-7 after the first quarter, the Rockets opened the second quarter on a 16-0 run that stretched out to a 21-2 run and a 28-12 Shelby lead before Anderson could stop the bleeding. The Rockets led 34-17 at halftime.
