  • This bird is cuckoo for...

Growing up on farms in Shelby and Spencer counties was an educational adventure within itself, and I highly recommend that as a way to raise your children, if at all possible.

Recent studies are showing that the average child spends at least 50 hours a week watching TV or playing computer games, time that could be more wisely spent enjoying and learning about the many wonders of the surrounding natural world.

  • This bird’s name is well-deserved

This is one of my favorite birds, and the major reason because it is well known in the bird world as the "King of Song."

It is the very best of the mockers and can duplicate the songs of at least 30 different bird species in rapid succession. Each phrase of the songs can be repeated two to six times, but it is usually three times.

Add to this a variety of sounds from whistles to barks, and you may even hear the tinkling sound of a piano or the sound of a squeaky hinge.

  • Organizers say Shelby County...

Bicyclists will be all over Shelby County this weekend.

That’s thanks to a new and unique event that will be held here Saturday and Sunday.

  • Tipton (6 RBIs) tips scales of...

Tyler Tipton’s big night at the plate helped the Shelbyville Post 37 American Legion baseball team make quick work of host Scott County on Tuesday.

Tipton went 3-for-4 with six runs batted in to lead Shelbyville to an 11-0, 5-inning victory

  • Looking for a go-to No. 2

Aaliyah Wells and Leeara Cardwell have been like the LeBron James and Dwyane Wade or Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook (depending on your NBA Finals preference) for the Collins girls’ basketball team during the past two seasons.

Cardwell, however, graduated earlier this month, leaving a big void on the Titans’ next squad.

  • SCHS girls host basketball event

Shelby County will host a girls’ basketball team shootout Monday-Wednesday. It will be played in the school’s auxiliary gym and at East Middle because Mike Casey Gymnasium is being painted.

The complete schedule is below. All games are varsity unless otherwise noted.

  • Rockets try to refuel in summer

Last summer was a springboard to a turnaround season by the Shelby County girls’ basketball team.

The Rockets went 3-22 in the 2010-11 season – their first under Coach Mike Sowers – but improved by 13 victories – one of the biggest turnarounds in the state – during last season’s 16-9 campaign.

That’s a betterment that Sowers traces back to the team-bonding and team-building of last summer.

  • I'll take '96 UK over...

Here are a few quick takes & one longer one:

  • American Legion goes 1-1 to open...

The Shelbyville Post 37 American Legion baseball team split its first two games of the season this past weekend.

Post 37 beat a team from Cincinnati, 12-10, on Saturday, but Rockport (Ind.) defeated Shelbyville, 9-2, Sunday.

  • Shelby native Bohannon captures...

Derrick Bohannon, a Shelbyville native who lives in Jensen Beach, Fla., birdied the second extra hole to capture the Club Fit Classic at Ironhorse County Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Monday.

It was the 18th victory on the Golfslinger.com Tour (formerly the Fuzion Minor League Golf Tour) for Bohannon.
