  • Welker graduates from Lee University

    Daniel Benjamin Welker has graduated magna cum laude from Lee University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology and minors in Asian studies, Spanish and religion. He will travel to Xinzheng, China, in August, where he has been awarded a 1-year scholarship to Sias International University to continue his study of Mandarin. He is the son of Vance and Trina Welker and a 2007 graduate of Cornerstone Christian Academy.

  • Commencements commence Saturday

    Although Saturday will be filled with graduation parties, gifts and cards, there won’t be any graduation ceremonies that day.

    Because Shelby County Public Schools still has one more day of school left on Monday, this weekend will be commencement ceremony weekend instead of graduation weekend. Diplomas will have to wait until after Monday.

    However, the schools are still abuzz with activity, commencement practices are filling afternoons Thursday and today, and hotels are booked.

  • Election 2012: Shelbyville election results to remain

    The Shelbyville City Council primary election results from May 22 will stand as is.

    On the night of the election, Democrat candidate Suzanne White said she was likely to ask for a recount after missing out on making the General Election by 11 votes. Incumbent Shane Suttor topped White, 465 to 454, for the final spot for the Democrats in the General Election. The entire election was very close, with only 99 votes separating White from the top vote-getter, Donna Eaton.

  • Collins seniors go out on a high note

    As the school year winds to an end, Collins High School took time on Wednesday to celebrate its seniors and their accomplishments as they move toward the next chapter in their lives.

    The class earned more than 80 scholarships and $1.5 million toward college, with even more expected to roll in.
