  • Shelby County tables city’s annexation request for Speedway property

    A request by the city of Shelbyville to annex the site on Mount Eden Road where Speedway is building a new store is going to require a bit more discussion.

    Acting on a motion by Magistrate Tony Carriss, Shelby County Fiscal Court voted at its meeting Tuesday to table the annexation request until a meeting could be scheduled with Shelbyville Mayor Tom Hardesty.

  • Wiley tied for 9th after 1st round of Kentucky Women's Open

    Shelbyville’s Candice Wiley is tied for ninth place after the first round of the Lexmark Kentucky Women’s Open golf tournament.

    Wiley, a Shelby County graduate and current University of Louisville golfer, shot a 3-over-par 75 at Champion Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville on Tuesday.

    She is eight shots behind Louisville’s Lindsay Gahm, who shot an opening-round 67 to claim the tournament lead, but is only three shots out of second place.

  • This beauty battles a beast

    A more beautiful woodpecker than the Red-headed Woodpecker would be almost impossible to find, and even then, it would be a matter of opinion.

    The Red-headed Woodpecker has a bright red head and neck with conspicuous white inner wings and rump. The rest of the body is black, which can give off a slight bluish tinge in the bright sunlight, a coloration that certainly makes this bird a strong candidate for the most patriotic bird in America.

    Becky Foley and Simon Fink of Saint Joseph, Mo., announce the birth of their first child, a son, on June 10, 2012, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Saint Joseph. He has been named Julius Hart Foleyfink.

    Grandparents are Darwin and Shirley Foley of Shelbyville and Leon Fink and Susan Levine of Chicago.  Great-grandparents are Mary Whitehouse of Danville, Irv and Bea Fink of Indianapolis, the late J.H. Whitehouse and Harry and Julia Levine of Chicago.

  • 6 injured in 4-car pileup

    Six people were injured – none believed seriously – in a 4-car pile-up Sunday on Eminence Pike at the intersection with Booker Pike.

    All except one have been released from the hospital, and the remaining person is in fair condition.

    According to a report from the Kentucky State Police, the accident occurred about 1 p.m. when a 2010 Toyota SUV driven northbound by Susan M. Ellis, 68, of Shelbyville was struck from behind by a 1994 Chevy Bazer driven by Billy J. Carter, 50, of Louisville.
