  • A group of students from Shelby County High School will gain a bit of celebrity status in coming weeks because of their involvement in a health an wellness poster campaign.

    The posters, which will be placed in each of the 10 schools in the district, feature students promoting healthy eating, exercise and lifestyle habits and practices.

    From drinking milk and eating fruits and vegetables to getting physical exercise and having proper hygiene, the posters show students participating in a wide variety of healthy habits.

    March 27 -- Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder meets 7-8:30 p.m. at the Learning Disabilities Association of Kentucky, 2210 Goldsmith Lane, #118, Louisville. For additional information, call the LDA office at 502-473-1256.

    April 7 -- Bridges Center at Rural Communities Hospice, (for adults grieving the death of a loved one) will meet 6-7:30 p.m. To pre-register for classes or for more information about support groups, call (502) 456-5451 or 1-888-345-8197.

  • Ricky Grigsby expects gas prices to hit $4 per gallon by this summer. He said he has no other choice but to sell his truck and get a smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicle.

    Grigsby said, other than driving to work, he tries to drive as little as possible - the price at the pump is just too much.

    "We don't travel as much as we used to," he said. "And I don't know what this will mean for summer vacation plans."

  • Kaitlin Cheek, 16, was the 2008 Youth Service Award winner from Pet Groups United. The award was announced at the group's fundraiser, Furball, on Feb. 23.

    Cheek has been involved in animal rescue since she was 8-years-old. She rehabilitates, nurses, trains and adopts animals to loving homes. She exercises rescue dogs every Wednesday and has completed a 15-hour course to help evaluate dog behavior. She regularly participates in animal transports from Pikeville to Chicago.
