Faith

  • Ashes to ashes, dust to dust

    By Jerry Cappel

You may or may not have noticed, but earlier this week millions of Christians around the world – and a few thousand in Kentucky – broke from their routines to gather together, listen to words of lament and have soot placed on their foreheads in the sign of the cross.

This was the celebration of Ash Wednesday, which for some Christians is the beginning of the annual season of Lent. “Remember that you are dust,” we repeated, “and to dust you shall return.”

  • We must be serious about tackling abuse

    By Dave Charlton

No more excuses. No more talk. No more foot-dragging. No more waffling. No more promises of “reform” that amount to nothing.

  • Meet the Rev. Jerry Cappel

    By Jerry Cappel

I would first like to thank The Sentinel-News for this opportunity to write about faith matters in this paper. My wife and I love The Sentinel. It keeps us connected to our neighbors and neighborhood, and is welcome relief from the constantly challenging and troubling national news and comment.

My hope is to write a regular column here on matters of faith and life. I also hope that my efforts will produce a genuine exploration and conversation that includes many of you. Otherwise, what good is it?

  • Why do I believe? There are many reasons

    By Dave Charlton

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

    - Hebrews 11:1

I have often been asked Dave, why do you believe?

Sometimes that question is asked because people want to know more of my story, in relation to my faith. What role has faith played in my life, how did I come to faith, and why did I come to faith?

Sometimes it is asked as more of a challenge, in a why in the world would you believe that stuff sort of way.

  • Be cautious in your rush to condemn others

As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.

10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.
