  • To pray like Jesus, you must want what Jesus wanted

    By Jerry Cappel

Most Americans who were raised "in the church," even nominally so, know what the "Lord's Prayer" is.

Many can recite it by memory. It is so routine and so habitual, it can just roll off the tongue without thought, completely by auto-pilot.

The origins of the prayer came from a request from Jesus' disciples. They had noticed that another religious leader of their time, John the Baptist, had been teaching his followers how to pray, and so they came to Jesus asking for a similar teaching.

    Community-wide Worship Celebration

  • Give extra grace where it is required

    By Dave Charlton

18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.

19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.

  • Religion, Faith, Hypocrisy and the Spirit

    By Jerry Cappel

Most of us have either said it or heard it said: "Those Christians are just a bunch of hypocrites! They are no better than anyone else!"

Speaking for Christians everywhere, I say – maybe. But do they have to be better than anyone else?

I know we have a visceral instinct to condemn the smug, self-righteous person who's attitudes and perceptions peeve us to no end. But then, how much smug self-righteousness does it take to judge them for it?

  • Churches need to open up to women in leadership

To millions of women, Beth Moore is an icon of spiritual wisdom and teaching. She has also become, most unexpectedly, a lightning rod of sorts within evangelical circles.

For years, Ms. Moore spoke to her legion of followers with not a whiff of controversy, but that quickly changed when she published an open letter to men (which you can read at this link: blog.lproof.org/2018/05/a-letter-to-my-brothers.html), especially men in church leadership.

  • Do or do not. There is no try

    By Jerry Cappel

There is an old story of a tightrope walker who could perform many difficult and amazing stunts on a high wire. He would often perform in unusual places such as between buildings or over a canyon, without a net, to boost the dramatic effect.
