  • Practice Easter resurrection

    By Jerry Cappel

This weekend, churches all around the world (the Orthodox will be a week later) will be pulling out all the stops – that is a reference to a pipe organ, by the way – to do their best to put on a celebration of Easter Sunday.

  • To keep earth ‘very good,’ changes are needed

    By Dave Charlton

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

    – Genesis 1:31

My hometown is in the northern panhandle of West Virginia, on the banks of the Ohio River.

That part of the country has been, historically, coal and steel country. In my growing up years, the sides of the mountains were deeply scarred by strip mining, and the Ohio River was heavily polluted by the waste from the mills.

  • Centenary provides free meal on Maundy Thursday

The English word "Maundy" comes from the Latin mandatum, which means "commandment."  Centenary United Methodist Church will celebrate Maundy Thursday on April 18, according to Pastor Scott Woodburn, who explained Maundy Thursday is an alternate name for Holy Thursday, the first of the three days in which Christ was betrayed, crucified and resurrected.

  • Help in grief comes from listening, hope

    By Dave Charlton

17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.

18 Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,

19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.

20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.

  • The “I am sick of you!” method doesn’t work

    By Jerry Cappel

No matter what side of whatever debates you are on, everyone agrees that we live in a world divided and entrenched into opposing camps that will not or cannot talk to each other.

We are baffled by those on the other side and angered by their positions. Each camp is sure they hold the answers for the day and the keys to the future. And each camp is so sure they are obviously right that the other camp must be blind fools not to see it.

  • Don’t let yourself suffer from blindness

    By Dave Charlton

35 As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging.

36 When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening.

37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”

38 He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
