• Scouting for food

    Cub Scouts, their parents, and pack leaders of Cub Scout Pack 270, sponsored by Shelby Christian Church, participated in the national Scout-for-Food program in November. The scouts collected more than 550 items – canned and packaged food – and delivered them to the Serenity Center on Frankfort Road for its food bank.

  • Cub Scouts meet firefighters

    Cub Scout Pack 511 of at Highland Baptist Church studied and talked about fire prevention and safety during the month of October. The Shelby County Fire Department visited with the troop, and the scouts were able to get a close look at the trucks and ask one-on-one questions with the firefighters.

  • Birth: Sowder son

    Bradley and Misty Sowder announce the birth of their second child, a son, on Oct. 1, 2012, at Central Baptist in Lexington. He has been named Elliot Dathan Sowder.

    Grandparents are C.B. and Kim Sage-Sowder of Shelbyville and Darrell and Carol Cox of Bagdad.

    Great-grandparents are D.C. Sowder, the late Christine Sowder, Fred and Sam Sage, Harold Cox, the late Shirley Cox, Frank Kane and the late Jean Lewis.

  • 60th anniversary: Ben Allen and Emily Thomas

    Ben Allen and Emily Thomas of Shelbyville have been married for 60 years. The couple was married on Nov. 8, 1952, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Louisville.

    He is 92 and a retired farmer, served on the board of directors of Commonwealth Bank & Trust and former Shelby County Trust Bank, Farm Bureau and Western District Warehousing Corporation and is a member of Cropper Ruritan.

    Army Reserve Pvt. Christopher G. Sanders has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

    Sanders is the son of Heidi Sanders of Shelbyville. He is a 2010 graduate of Shelby County High School.

    Army Pvt. Jay L. Snyder has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. Snyder is the son of Jackie Snyder of Michigan and Lou Snyder of Shelbyville. He is a 2010 graduate of Northville High School in Michigan.

  • McLeod daughter

    James and Amy McLeod of Brandon, Miss., announce the birth of their child, a daughter, on Sept. 21, 2012, at Women’s Hospital in Flowood, Miss. She has been named Claire Elaine McLeod.

    Grandparents are Denise and Jake Bryan and Jackie Willard, all of Shelbyville; and Larry and Pat McLeod of Brandon, Miss.

  • Shelby resident completing 1,700-plus hours of service

    Rachel Price of Shelbyville is serving on the final project with the AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) North Central Region. Price and their team are serving with The Black Hills Works.

    NCCC Members are supervising individuals with disabilities and helping them with a variety of tasks, such as art projects, working in the kitchen, cleaning, putting together medical kits, exercising and playing games.
