WADDY – Skeet and rifle shooting is about fellowship and, ultimately, about spreading God’s word, according to Mount Vernon Baptist Church chairman Garry Gaines.
Mount Vernon Baptist Church of Waddy is hosting its first Spring Shoot and Game Day this Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring skeet, rimfire pistol and rimfire rifle shoots for children and adults of all ages.
Gaines said Mount Vernon, where he is chairman of the Brotherhood Missions group, sponsors a similar and traditional event every fall — a turkey shoot — and has done so for about 20 years.
“In the country, you do something more related to the country,” Gaines said when asked why the Brotherhood Missions group decided to host the spring shoot.
The church holds a fishing tournament, but Gaines said he wanted to offer an event where attendees could communicate more closely with one another.
The goal for the church for the event, Gaines said, is “spreading Gods word, letting people know churches are not a bad thing.”
“It’s an outreach program. That’s all it is; that’s what we’re using it for,” he said.
Participants need to bring their own firearms and ammunition, but the only cost for the event is two non-perishable food items for the church’s food bank.
The day starts with a gun safety course, and a retired police officer from Shelbyville, also a certified instructor, will be on site, Gaines said.
The Shoot and Game Day also includes a short devotional, lunch, corn-hole tournament, several shooting contests for youth and adults and a charity swap meet.
Participants can bring old ammunition, hunting gear and other items priced to sell for the swap, according to the church’s press release.
Proceeds of the swap will go to the Mount Vernon Baptist Church Brotherhood Missions to purchase food for people in need, Bibles, supplies for church building repairs and other ministries, Gaines said.
