Several kids were playing with handgun

A shooting occurred over the weekend that has left one injured teen in the hospital.

According to a release sent to The Sentinel-News after press time Tuesday, the incident occurred Saturday afternoon when several teens were playing with a handgun.  The firearm accidentally discharged, shooting one of the teens in the abdomen.

Shelbyville Police responded to the scene. “The wounded teen was taken to University [of Louisville] Hospital by Shelby County EMS and is currently recovering from the injury,” the press release stated. “This incident is still under investigation by detectives with the Shelbyville Police Department.”

The department urges children and adults to review and follow responsible gun safety practices.

“The Shelbyville Police Department would like to remind everyone that if a firearm is ever found, do not touch it and notify police immediately.”
