Several locations around the county give families a chance for fun and food

The Summer Feeding Program has been happening for more than 25 years, but now, the county school system hopes to make it better than ever.

Shelby County Schools has added even more locations to the yearly program, which provides free lunches to children.

“It’s a program where kids can eat lunch after some of our activities, like the Magic School Bus,” Shelby County Schools Public Relations Coordinator Cyndi Skellie said. “We’ll have lunch available after that activity at proposed sites throughout the district and Southside Elementary will actually serve free breakfast and lunch to students throughout the summer.”

Skellie said the Tiger Tours mobile unit would also deliver meals to students around the community.

As a whole, the effort represents a chance for families to enjoy meals together at very little cost.

“It’s a chance for kids to have a hot lunch at various sites throughout Shelby County,” Skellie said. “Parents can purchase meals as well for $4.”

The program has continued to grow of the over years, casting a wider net over the county.

"I have worked here for 27 years and we have always had summer feeding,” said Cindy Murphy, food service coordinator for SCPS. “In recent years we have increased the number of sites and the number of children served.”

Skellie said the event would give residents the chance to reap some of the benefits they get during school outside the classroom.

“The benefits of this program are important. Students and community get to interact and are given a nutritious meal,” she said. “The program fills a need during the summer months to students not in school to receive a prepared lunch.”

The meals themselves will also look familiar to the students who participate.

“The meals are similar to meals throughout the school year,” Skellie said. “Each meal includes an entree, vegetable, fruit and a milk.”

The individual events will also include more than just food.

“The staff and volunteers take hula hoops, bubbles and books to share during the mobile site visits,” Skellie said. “The Magic School Bus will serve meals after each one of its stops throughout the community.”

Skellie compared the atmosphere of the event to a picnic, depending on where it was being held.

“Some of the sites are in community centers and usually the meals are prepared and placed in coolers and sent out,” she said. “They’re places where kids can get to them easily.”

The program will continue through Aug. 14, with stops and activities through the entire summer, except for July 4 and 5.
