A Shelbyville man has been arrested and charged with the rape and sodomy of a 17-year-old girl.

Gregory G. Newton, 23, of 414 Sycamore Terrace, was arrested Saturday and charged with first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy.

The teen, who is not being identified because she is a juvenile and an alleged victim of a sexual crime, was taken to Jewish Hospital Shelbyville and treated for sexual assault.

The incident occurred at 3 a.m. Saturday at 1609 Cherry Lane, according to a Shelbyville Police report.

Shelbyville Police Department spokesperson Kelly Cable said that the incident was not a random act. He said Newton and the girl were acquainted with each other, although he declined to clarify their relationship. No weapons were involved, he said.

Cable said he does not know if the residence where the alleged raped occurred was where the girl lives.

The crime came to the attention of police when Shelbyville PD was contacted by officials from Jewish Hospital Shelbyville, who informed them that they were treating a sexual assault victim in the emergency room.

The girl told officers that Newton forced her to have sexual intercourse with him and that he forced oral sodomy on her as well, police said.

Newton, who was arrested nearly three hours after the incident, has denied forcing the girl to have sexual intercourse with him, the report said.

Newton is being held at the Shelby County Detention Center under a $15,000 cash bond. He was arraigned Tuesday in Shelby District Court.

Both charges are Class B felonies, punishable by 10 to 20 years in prison.
