A Shelbyville man was sentenced last week to more than 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty on child pornography charges.
Ronald Craig Hornback, 51, was sentenced July 27 in Frankfort by U.S. District Judge Danny Reeves to 121 months on one count of receiving child pornography.

Hornback will also be required to register as a sex offender.

He was arrested Feb. 26, 2010, after a 5-month investigation by the state attorney general’s Cybercrimes Unit, which identified more than 700 suspected images of child pornography on his computer.

He was placed on house arrest in April 2010 after being indicted in Shelby County Circuit Court on four counts of possession of material portraying a sexual performance by a minor.

Each count is a Class D felony that carries a penalty of 1 to 5 years is prison.

Hornback’s case went federal last spring after Shelby County Commonwealth Attorney Laura Donnell agreed to dismiss charges so that Hornback could be indicted at the federal level, which generally has more severe penalties and offers no early release.

Kyle Edelen, spokesperson for the U.S. District Court, said that each count in federal court carries a penalty of 5 to 20 years.

Prosecutors would not comment on the ages of the children in the images except to say they were younger than 12 years old.

But the indictment contained records of files found on Hornback’s computer that described children 9 years old, 6 years old and a file downloaded in 2009 with the description of toddlers from 0 years old to 9 years old.

When he was arrested, Hornback was barred from using a computer and forbidden to have contact with children under the age of 16 years old.
