Blake Cook’s walk-off single gives Rockets win over Fern Creek

By Les Abbott

The Shelby County baseball team recorded its fifth win of the season in dramatic fashion Tuesday.

After tying the game in the bottom of the sixth, Blake Cook stepped to the plate with two-outs and runners in scoring position. Cook delivered a single to left, scoring Marcus Collins and securing the win for the Rockets in walk-off fashion.

Cook said delivering in big moments is something to be expected playing at this level.

“It felt awesome,” he said. “It’s something you expect everyday just hopping out of bed.”

The Rockets rallied throughout the game and Cooks fingerprints would be all over the scorebook.

Shelby first tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the fourth on a Dylan Steinmiller RBI triple that scored Cook.

And again in the bottom of the sixth the Rockets would tie the game at 2 when Cook scored again, this time on an Austin Griffin sac fly.

Cook’s heroics weren’t the only factor in the Rockets victory.

Shelby used three pitchers who combined to allow just two runs and four hits in seven innings.

Head coach Erik Phelps said he was trying to keep the load light on his staff with a big weekend slate approaching, and he was impressed with the way his pitchers handled the short work.

“Our pitchers threw strikes,” Phelps said. “We used three arms trying to get ready for our big weekend with Anderson County, and we didn’t want to throw too many pitches with too many guys. Everyone pounded the zone and did a really good job. Our hitters stayed competitive and we just really competed the whole twenty-one outs. It was really fun to watch, and our pitching was just outstanding.”

The Rockets played at Oldham County Thursday but the results were not available at press time.

Shelby begins a home-and-away series for district seeding purposes against Anderson County tonight with a 5:45 game at Anderson. The Bearcats will then visit Shelby at noon Saturday.
