Saturday wrap-up

Here is a wrap-up of Saturday for local readers:

1. Shelbyville's Brandon Brown shot a 2-under-par in today's third round of the Nationwide Tour's Stadion Classic at UGA in Athens, Ga. and is tied for 8th-place overall at 10-under-par (203=65-69-69). South Africa's Tyrone Van Aswegen at 13-under. Brown who is in line for his biggest pro golf payday will tee off at 11:35 a.m. Sunday.

2. It wasn't a great 138th Kentucky Derby for either jockey with a pair of local ties. Shelbyville's Jon Court finished 11th aboard Optimizer, while Sabercat, with former Shelby County resident Corey Nakatani in the saddle, finished 15th.

3. There will be a NBA champ this year thanks to Oklahoma City's sweep of Dallas, which was completed tonight. To me it looks like it's going to be hard for any one in either conference to beat the Thunder and the Miami Heat. I think that would be a great NBA Finals.

4. The Collins baseball team's big 30th District game at Anderson County was rained out Saturday and has been rescheduled until Monday afternoon. But that still will be pending the playing conditions of the Bearcats' field. The Titans are coming off a tough 2-1 loss at Woodford County on Friday night.

5. The 8th Region tennis tournaments get underway Monday in Frankfort and I've learned that Shelby County sophomore Ethan Russell is the No. 6 seed in boys' singles, while the Rockets' top double duo of sophomore Doug Martin and eighth-grader Jeron Russell are the No. 2 seeds. Collins sophomore Paige Kregor is the No. 2 seed in singles on the girls' side. She'll play her first match around 6 p.m. Monday night. Meanwhile the Titans' No. 2 singles player, Blair Nethery, drew the tournament's top seed for her first match.
