Shelbyville goes 2-1 in weekend trip to Indiana

By Brian Stone

Shelbyville Post 37 earned two wins and a loss in three games over the weekend, facing off against a pair of Indiana teams in Boonville Post 200 and Rockport Post 254.

The wins pushed Shelbyville closer to .500 on the season at 7-8.

Shelbyville 9, Rockport 8 (10 innings)

The only game of the day on Sunday saw Shelby and Rockport head into extras, with Lukas Tackett coming up big for Post 37.

With the game tied at 8 in the top of the 10th and Michael Lonak on third, Tackett ripped a line drive to right, allowing Shelby to take a one-run lead.

Post 37 held on in the bottom of the inning, as defense and the pitching of Jakob McDaniel closed out Indiana.

Catcher Zane Baker was an important factor both behind the plate and offensively for Shelby, as the Spalding University athlete went 2-5 with four RBIs coming by way of a triple and a double.

Fellow Shelby teammate Blake Gribbins also helped out with run support for four different Post 37 pitchers. Gribbins drove in two runs with a triple and double of his own in a 2-3 day at the plate.

Austin Ruble, Michael Hill, Adam Weining and McDaniel combined to pick up the win on the bump.

Ruble tossed the majority of the game and got the start, allowing four hits and two earned runs to go along with a pair of strikeouts.

Post 37 grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Rockport stayed in the game, tying it up at 2-2 by the end of the third inning.

Shelby once again took the lead in the top of the fifth, plating six runs thanks to Baker and Gribbins and going up 8-2.

The Indiana team continued clawing back into the game with a pair of three run frames in the sixth and seventh innings, leading to an 8-8 tie and sending the game into extras where Tackett would put the game on ice for Post 37.

Shelbyville 12, Boonville 1

Post 37 picked up a dominant win in game two of its doubleheader Saturday, behind a solid pitching performance by Bobby Fowler and 13 hits.

At the plate, nearly each of Shelby’s players contributed RBI’s, led by Jakob McDaniel and Michael Lonak who drove in three runs apiece.

Additionally, Zane Baker drove in a pair of runs as well on two hits, as Shelby took a quick 10-1 lead by the end of the third frame.

From there, Post 37 was able to cruise to a win thanks to its hitting and Fowler’s pitching, as the hurler allowed just four hits and no earned runs while fanning three hitters.

Michael Hill, Blake Gribbins, Lukas Tackett and Austin Ruble chipped in an RBI apiece in the win, allowing Shelby to even the weekend series at one win apiece with Boonville once all was said and done.

Boonville 4, Shelbyville 3

In the opening contest of the weekend, Shelby attempted to make a comeback late after struggling to hit the ball for the first six innings, but came up just short in its quest for a weekend sweep.

Boonville plated three runs to kick off the scoring in the bottom of the third frame.

Other than Post 200’s early lead, the game was mostly a pitching duel, with John Henry Fowler tossing several solid innings on the mound for Shelbyville.

Despite allowing nine hits, Fowler only suffered the one bad inning in the third, giving up four earned runs for the game and striking out a quartet of Boonville hitters in the process.

Shelby’s offense finally picked up in the sixth, as Michael Lonak drove in an RBI to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Boonville added its final run in the bottom of the same inning, pulling back out ahead of Shelby by three runs once again.

A pair of RBIs by Michael Hill and Zane Baker started a Post 37 rally but it came up just short.
