ArtFest joins concerts, car cruise downtown

The Shelbyville Horse Show Jubilee hits full stride this weekend as it commands downtown Shelbyville for a community celebration.

The jubilee got off to a rousing start with a breakfast on Thursday morning and the reception for the Youth Art Show on Thursday night.

But the weekend accelerates quickly at 6 tonight when musician Will Husband will entertain in a Street Party Concert in the parking lot at 627 Main Street.

ArtFest, an arts and crafts fair in conjunction with The Gallery at Shelby Artists on Main, helps start things on Saturday at 4 p.m., and then downtown will be taken over by dozens of vintage automobiles for a car cruise in conjunction with the Shelby County Car Club.

The band Nobodyz Bizzness will follow at 7 p.m. with the Street Party Concert at 5th and Main streets.

Children will have the Sidewalk ChalkFest at 6 p.m. outside the Shelby County Courthouse. And there’s more, said Eilene Collins, executive director of Shelby Development Corporation, which operates the jubilee.

“The added attractions are the Free Photo Booth sponsored by Torrey Smith and ArtFest for arts and crafts,” Collins said. “The Shelby Democratic Committee will have a bouncy room for children in the area of ChalkFest.”

Those additions offset the discontinuation of the plastic duck race and the stick-horse parade, which had limited participation.

The events will close Main Street to through traffic from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday between 7th and 3rd streets.

And Collins expressed excitement for this year’s event, which figures to have cooler temperatures.

“Stores will be open, vendors will be around 5th Street, and we are expecting the biggest crowd ever,” she said.
