MY WORD: Habitat needs a variety of helpers

-A A +A

By Deb Rhind

Everybody wants to “pound nails,” but the Shelby County Habitat for Humanity also needs volunteers to serve on our committees. Strong committees ensure our affiliate can sustain long-term house building in Shelby County. Everyone has a talent, and your talents would be welcome to serve in some capacity on one of our committees.

Our Family Selection and Mentoring Committee carries out the board’s vision of placing qualified families or individuals in decent, affordable housing. Once a family/individual has a applied, this group makes sure the applicant meets the established criteria to be selected as a partner with Habitat. After a family/individual has been selected, the committee establishes and tracks the affiliate’s sweat equity policies, provides classes and other educational opportunities for families, and assists the family in making choices concerning the construction of their home. This committee finds the joy in making homeownership, a seemingly impossible dream for many people, a reality.

The Construction and Site Selection Committee finds available land to build, defines the type of construction that best suits the needs of the family, community and Habitat’s goals. Those that like to dabble in real estate and/or house design criteria (materials, plans, energy efficiency, etc) would be a great fit for this committee.

The Resource Committee maintains our Web site, Facebook page, develops flyers/posters and advertisements for newspapers, radio and TV as needed. If you enjoy social media, computer time or have graphic skills, we need you.

Finally, our Special Events/Development Committee works on grants, implements public relations and fund-raising goals. This committee organizes our annual golf outing and may also seek donors or sponsors. Outgoing, social people may enjoy volunteering for this group.

If any of these committees sound of interest to you, please contact me at 502-633-5518 or executivedirector@habitatshelbyky.org.
