There never seems to be a dearth of news in Shelby County.

Just today, we have crime, we have an interesting trial about to start and we have people around the state talking about a smoking ban.

The Sentinel-News has implored local government to set standards for restaurant smoking, and it seems that now might be an opportune time, to get a locally created ordinance on the books before the state establishes its policy, which likely would be much broader.

Our local legislators say they don't expect the measure to gain footing this term, but I wonder why not? Other states have successfully dealt with this issue of great public health. Why not our leaders?

Tobacco no longer is a very large straw in Kentucky's economic drink. In fact, it's barely a stir stick, so whatever power that industry once held over our elected officials has diminished significantly.

It's time to do something.
