Book sale benefits library, newspapers in classrooms

By The Staff

The Sentinel-News will partner with the Friends of the Library as sponsor of the annual used book sale to benefit literacy in Shelby County.

Bookfest will be Oct. 10-13 at Stratton Center in Shelbyville and will feature books, CDs, DVDs and other related materials donated to be sold to benefit the Shelby County Public Library and the newspaper’s Newspapers in Education program.

For years the library had hosted the event, but the facility’s management determined it no longer could manage the requirements of the 3-day sale. Sentinel-NewsPublisher Kerry Johnson stepped in to ensure that this event continued to support books and reading among Shelby Countians.

“Through the years the Friends of the Library have supported our wonderful library with tens of thousands of dollars, which have gone for supplies, equipment, landscaping, benches, and to underwrite the cost of bringing a well-known author [Silas House, Sue Grafton] to town for a special talk and visit with library patrons,” Friends of the Library President Bill Matthews wrote in an announcement to members.

“We are excited to be part of the annual book sale, now called Bookfest,” Johnson said. “It’s important for our community to encourage reading in all shapes and for all ages.

“Bookfest will offer thousands of good books at very low prices. There will be something for everyone. Best of all, all, proceeds will keep bringing more books and newspapers to our children and community.”

A special reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 10 will give members of the Friends of the Library a first look at the items that are for sale and will include a silent auction of literary items and an opportunity to meet local authors who have produced books in the past year.

The public sale will be 10 a.m.-5  p.m. Oct. 11-12 and 9-a.m. noon on Oct. 13.

If you have books, CDs, DVDs or other items you would like to donate, you can drop them at the offices of The Sentinel-News, 703 Taylorsville Road or at the offices of Crahan Wealth Management, 529 Main St. in Shelbyville.

If you can’t transport you books, you can call 633-7766 for pick up. Final day for pickup will be Oct. 5.
