Back to the final: Becherer has been there before

-A A +A

Tom Becherer knows a thing or two about the state football championship, having taken Shelby County to four finals and one title. Now he's giving his wisdom to Collins' defense.

By Josh Cook

When Jerry Lucas got the job as the Collins football coach, he said he knew he had to have Tom Becherer on his staff.

Becherer, the former Shelby County coach, who had guided the Rockets to the state title in 1987 as well as runner-up finishes in 1976, ’77 and ’93, was retired but still living in the county.

“There was no way I was going to let him sit and not coach football,” Lucas said.
