Friday night football scrimmages: Collins wins, Shelby County loses

In high school football scrimmage action Friday night Collins beat Lexington Lafayette 20-9, while Shelby County fell to Owen County 20-9.

I attended the Rockets' scrimmage and the bad news for there was that junior quarterback Zach Shipley left the game late in the first quarter with a shoulder injury and junior wideout/safety Michael Barry was ejected for throwing a punch during a first-half scrum.

Darius Miller one of final 14 for Team USA

University of Kentucky senior Darius Miller is among the final 14 for the 2011 USA Men's World University Games basketball team.

This could be a big boost for Miller, who has lacked consistency in his game over the past three seasons. He'll need to improve it he's going to keep pace with UK's star-studded freshmen class that is coming in.

Former UK player Desmond Allison killed

Former University of Kentucky men's basketball player Desmond Allison was killed today in a shooting in Columbus, Ohio.

Allison played for the Wildcats from 1998-2000. He was kicked off the team in 2000 by then-coach Tubby Smith after a DUI arrest.

Unbelievable high school dunker!

If you haven't seen him so far, you have to check out the dunks of high school senior Shaquille Johnson.

1. Thanks to a sizzling 63 in today's final round, Shelbyville's Brandon Brown finished seventh in the Heart of North Carolina Golf Classic.

2. Hopefully by this time to tomorrow we'll be talking about the ensuing NFL season.

Three for fun...

Here are three sports/pop culture items for your Saturday:

1. Maybe this explains why JJ Barea played so well in the NBA Finals.

2. Who knew the Tour de France had become so physical?

UK football gets once first-place vote?!

Who's the yahoo who picked the University of Kentucky's football team to win the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division?

The Wildcats received one first-place vote to win the SEC East at SEC Media Days this week.

Jordan can still dunk

If there's one thing you should know about me it's that I believe that Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player ever to lace'em up (Kobe can't carry his jock if you ask me). So it's nice to see that Jordan, at 48, can still dunk.
