A few thoughts on tonight's Shelby County-Collins football game

Here are a few of my thoughts on tonight's Shelby County at Collins football game, or n.q.k.a. (not quite known as) the County Clash, the Shelbyville Showdown, the Clash of Titans and Rockets. Along with a good nickname, this game needs some type of traveling trophy, how about the Battle for the Saddle? Since Shelbyville is known as the Saddlebred Capital of the World. Tweet me if you have any suggestions.

Five for Saturday afternoon

Here are five things for Saturday afternoon:

1. The high school golf season begins this weekend. There was a big boys' tournament yesterday and today the Shelby County girls' team is playing in the Nelson County Invitational. Look for my previews on the Collins and Shelby teams in the paper beginning next week.

2. Former Shelby County and Western Kentucky basketball standout A.J. Slaughter will continue his career overseas. He announced today on his Twitter account that he will play next season with a team in France.

All-star baseball begins tonight

Youth all-star baseball begins tonight.

The Shelby County 9-year-old Cal Ripken All-Stars play host Scott County at 7 p.m. tonight in the District 2 Tournament. Here is the bracket.

Meanwhile Shelby County will host the 10-year-old District 2 Tournament beginning Monday. Shelby County's first game is at 6 p.m. Tuesday night. Here is the complete bracket.

Collins boys' basketball plays Oldham, Bullitt East today and Ballard tomorrow

In the state of Kentucky it's pretty much always basketball season and today begins the summer basketball season.

The Collins boys' basketball team starts things off in a big way. The Titans take on Oldham County at 5 p.m. today - in a rematch of last season's 8th Region Tournament final - then play University of Kentucky recruit Derek Willis and Bullitt East around 7 p.m. to kickoff their summer league.

Collins will then host Ballard at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Shelby County vs. Henry County glance

Here's a quick look at Monday's 8th Region Tournament first-round game between Shelby County and Henry County, which is slated to begin around 11 a.m. Monday at Collins.

The two teams have already met once this season. The Rockets beat the Wildcats 4-1 May 7 at the Shelby County Athletic Complex. Here's a recap of that game:

30th District softball tourney glance

Here's a quick glance at the 30th District softball tournament, which begins today (weather permitting) at Spencer County. Top-seed Spencer County (15-14) will take on No. 4 Shelby County (8-24) at 6 p.m., then second-seeded Collins (18-15) will meet third-seeded Anderson County (16-18) at 8 p.m. The final is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Here's a look at both match-ups:

State Track & Field advance & updates

Greetings from the Class AA Track & Field State Championships at the University of Louisville's Owsley B. Frazier Cardinal Park.

I profiled Shelby County junior Zach Shipley, who is the prohibitive favorite in the boys' 300-meter hurdles, in today's paper so here is a quick look at some of today's events to watch involving athletes from both Collins and Shelby County.

30th District softball tournament pairings set

The Spencer County softball team rallied to beat Collins 5-3 in 8 innings Thursday night and claim the top seed in next week's 30th District Tournament.

With the win the Bears (14-14, 2-1) tied the Titans (18-15, 2-1) for the best record in the four-team district, but Spencer earned the No. 1 seed by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Bears' victory over Collins also means that Anderson County (14-13, 1-2) is the No. 3 seed and Shelby County (7-24, 1-2) is the No. 4 seed in the tourney that begins Monday at Spencer County.

See how the locals are seeded for Class 2A state track & field meet

Take a look at how the locals from Collins and Shelby County stack up against the others in the seedings for Friday's Class 2A State Track & Field meet at the University of Louisville.

Shelby County junior Zach Shipley is the top seed in the 300-meter hurdles, while Collins senior Caterina Karas is the No. 1 seed in the 800 and her younger sister, seventh-grader Gabby, is the top seed in the 1,600.

Matthew Murphy signs with Georgetown College

Collins senior Matthew Murphy signed to play men's soccer at Georgetown College on Friday afternoon at the high school's library.

Murphy was a standout defender for the Titans each of the past two seasons, helping them to a 25-13-3 record.

"I picked Georgetown mostly because I know it's going to be a good education school for me," Murphy said. "[Plus] I have a few friends who already go there and play soccer and my sister [Melanie] went there, so I guess it kind of runs in my family."
