State softball rankings

Here is the latest high school softball poll. Neither Collins nor Shelby County received any votes. Oldham County is the lone 8th Region team ranked in the Top 24. The Colonels are tied for 18th. Two region teams were among the others receiving votes. They were Anderson County and Walton-Verona.

Shelby County baseball called off for tonight

Shelby County's baseball game at Bishop Brossart, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tonight, has been called off due to rain.

The Rockets next host Nelson County at 6 p.m. Thursday evening.

Collins baseball called off today

Not surprisingly Collins' baseball game against Meade County scheduled for 6 p.m. today has been called off due to rain.

Trinity-Collins baseball game stopped by rain

Friday night's game between 11th-ranked Trinity and Collins was stopped with no out and a runner on first base in the top of the fifth inning due to heavy rains that moved through the area. The Shamrocks led 8-3 at that point, but the game wasn't official because it didn't go the full five innings.

Trinity scored once in the top of the first on Phillip Leopold's RBI-doubel.

Brown shoots 67 today

Shelbyville's Brandon Brown bounced back from a rough first round to shoot a 5-under par today in the second round of the NGA/Hooters Terry Moore Ford Open. He is currently tied for 14th.

Brown shot a first round 75, but has turned in what is the lowest second round so far. Let's hope he can carry that momentum into the weekend.

Collins baseball wins first game 11-1

The Collins baseball team won its first-ever game Thursday (unfortunately it was too late to get it in Friday's paper), beating Henry County 11-1 on the Titans' new field.

Tyler Tipton went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead Collins, which broke open the game with a four-run third inning.

Junior left-hander Cody Adler picked up the victory on the mound for the Titans. He went four innings (of the six-inning game), allowing three hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out eight.

Billy G. is back

Former University of Kentucky men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie is back in the business. As many expected Billy G. has been named the new coach at Texas Tech. Good move or bad move for the Red Raiders' program? He does bring a slight name recognition to the job, and a knowledge of the state, but I'm not sold on him yet.

NCAA Tournament bracket breakdown

The Kentucky and Louisville men's basketball teams each received No. 4 seeds in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, whose field was announced tonight.
