  • Streak stopped Rockets restart

    The Shelby County baseball team got back on track Wednesday night and also got a little revenge in the process.

    One night after Owen County ended the Rockets’ 13-game winning streak, Shelby County blasted Henry County – the team that ousted it from the 8th Region Tournament last year – 13-1, in six innings.

    The Rebels (6-5) rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat the Rockets on Tuesday night at the Shelby County Athletic Complex.

  • Western Hills slams SCHS...

    Host Western Hills pounded out 15 hits – and used a pair of 4-run innings – to topple the Shelby County softball team, 11-3, Tuesday in Frankfort.

    The Wolverines (3-7) got off to a good start, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, and kept on rolling against the Rockets (5-9).

    Freshman Sydney Wright and seventh-grader Hannah Webb accounted for half of Shelby County’s hits, with two each.

  • Rockets’ girls win at wire

    The Shelby County girls’ track & field team squeaked past host Collins by the slimmest of margins Tuesday at the Titans’ All-Comers meet.

    Despite the fact that Collins won seven events and the Rockets captured just three, the Rockets edged the Titans, 77-76, in a 5-team meet.

    On the flip side, Anderson County outscored Collins, 104-96, in the boys’ meet. Shelby County, which rested many of its top athletes, finished fifth with 19 points.

  • Collins softball goes 1-2 in...

    The Collins softball team went 1-2 at the Woodford County Spring Break Escape this past weekend then lost to Louisville Eastern on Monday night.
    The Titans (7-8) beat Butler County, 8-1, but lost to Central Hardin, 9-1, Friday in Versailles before Our Lady of Mercy Academy (N.Y.) topped them, 9-2, Saturday. Monday, the visiting Eagles slammed the Titans, 17-8.

  • Winning streak hits 13

    Wood was good for the Shelby County baseball team this past weekend.
    The Rockets won a trio of games – their 11th, 12th and 13th consecutive victories – Friday and Saturday in the Henry County/Shelby County Wood Bat Classic.
    Using wooden bats, Shelby County beat Butler County, 7-0, and Rowan County, 5-1, Friday before flogging Fleming County, 12-2, Saturday to improve to 14-1

    Kipp Moore tossed a 2-hit, complete-game shutout at the Bears (4-6) on Friday afternoon.

    Good teams will make you pay for extra outs, according to the old diamond truth.

    A Shelby County error prolonged the top of the fourth inning Monday night, and Anderson County showed why it feels it is becoming a good team.

    Seven consecutive Bearcats reached base – six of them scored – in the decisive inning on their way to a 7-0 victory in a key 30th District matchup at the Shelby County athletic complex.

  • Collins' baseball team...

    The Collins baseball team reeled off three more victories – two late last week and one Monday – to stay perfect for the season.

    The Titans downed Doss, 7-2, Thursday, then rallied to beat DeSales, 3-2, Saturday before bombing host Bullitt Central, 12-2, in five innings Monday night to run their record to 16-0.

  • Rockets countdown hits record 10

    The Shelby County baseball team ran its winning streak to 10 games – the longest in coach Bart “Rudy” Roettger’s tenure – with road victories Tuesday and Wednesday.

    The Rockets edged host North Hardin, 4-3, Tuesday, then clobbered Carroll County, 11-2, Wednesday.

    “I can’t complain too much with the eleven and one record on the season,” said Roettger, who is in his sixth season at Shelby.

  • Slaughter makes history

    The University of Louisville men’s and women’s basketball teams have a chance to make history early next week.

    Both Cardinals squads will compete in the NCAA Final Fours this weekend – the men in Atlanta and the women in New Orleans – with the chance to become only the second school (Connecticut did it in 2004) to win both national championships in the same season (the men’s title game is Monday night, the women’s Tuesday night).
