  • No foul ups this time

BUCKNER -- When it really mattered, the Rockets were able to play smart basketball Friday night.

Consider the final minutes of Shelby's 61-58 victory at Oldham County a template for closing out games.

The Rockets went 6-for-7 from the line in the final two minutes. They didn't make any silly turnovers. And neither did they give up an open 3-point shot.

BUCKNER -- Losing starter Marissa Raisor midway through the second quarter Friday night against Oldham County  could have devastated the Lady Rockets.

As a senior, Raisor rarely gets replaced, and she runs much of Shelby County's defense, her steals tending to spark the team.

But as her ankle swelled to the size of a softball, Raisor didn't have to watch her team struggle against the Lady Colonels. The Lady Rockets seemed to play harder.

BUCKNER -- Both Shelby girls and boys basketball teams came away with wins at Oldham County High School Friday.

The girls won 74-57 in the first game of the night. Shelby trailed early in the first but turned that around to a 21-11 lead in the first quarter.

Lady Rocket senior Marissa Raisor went out with an ankle injury in the second quarter. She's expected to be out for more than a week. Her teammates rallied on the floor without their defensive leader.

Solid 3-point shooting saved Shelby County on an inconsistent defensive night, as the Rockets won 58-47 at Henry County Tuesday night.

The Rockets hit seven threes, including three from Boomer Beckley, in the first half to lead 35-24 at halftime. But the third quarter saw the Wildcats out-score Shelby 13-5 and trim the lead to 40-37.

Cache Tomlinson gave his team some much-needed breathing room early in the fourth with two threes. A couple steals helped stop the Wildcats, who found it all to easy to pull the Rocket defense out of the lane for an easy bucket.

  • Local elk hunt on air this week

Shelby County’s Kathy Smith will make her television debut this week on Huntin’ The World Southern Style on the Outdoor Channel.

Smith filmed the show last October after she was selected in Kentucky’s lottery for elk tags. Not only did Smith receive one of just 1,000 elk tags, but her tag was also one of just 250 bull tags.

After spending a day hunting with the show, Smith bagged a bull that weighed in at more than 800 pounds, field dressed, and was more than 9-feet long.

GOSHEN -- The Rockets rebounded from an early deficit to defeat North Oldham 84-75 Friday night.

It was an emotionally charged game before it started, with North Oldham fans taunting almost-Mustang Darryl Hicks. But Hicks shook it off, and the freshman rode that intensity to 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Three more Rockets scored in double digits: Boomer Beckley, Cache Tomlinson and Donovan Johnson. Johnson also had a double-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds.
