  • Anderson tops Rockets for...

After the Rockets cut Anderson County’s lead to one, 27-26, with a big second quarter, fans probably expected Shelby to come out firing after the break. But a six-point effort in the third quarter cost the Rockets (14-14) in a 55-49 loss to Bearcats (21-5) in Friday’s 30th District Championship game.

Anderson County had outscored Shelby, 13-6, with just seconds remaining in the third, but the Rockets’ trailed just 40-32.

  • Rockets fall short in district...

The SCHS boys' basketball team's seven-game win streak ended Friday when Anderson County topped the Rockets 55-49 in the 30th District Championship Friday at Anderson County.

The Rockets trailed by 11, 43-32, at the start of the fourth quarter, but used a 13-2 run to close within one, 48-47, with 1:30 to play. But Anderson County hit five of six free throws over the final 29.2 seconds to seal the victory.

Boomer Beckley led the Rockets with 12 points, and Donovan Johnson and Daryl Hicks each added 10. Anderson County's C.J. Penny led all scorers with 23.

  • Valentine Classic sweet for...

The Shelby Sharks tore into their qualifying times at the Valentine Classic last weekend, earning a trip to state championships in March for 30 kids on the team and a trip to national competition for four swimmers.

The annual Valentine Classic attracted 14 teams from three states and 580 swimmers to the Family Activity Center on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The meet was the last chance for the Sharks to improve their times or qualify for new state meet events.

  • Spencer nips Lady Rockets

For the first time since 1993, the 30th District will crown a new girls’ basketball tournament champ.

The Lady Rockets fell, 42-38, to Spencer County in the district’s first round Wednesday. The loss will keep Shelby County from playing in next week’s 8th Region Tournament for the first time since at least 1974, when the program was just beginning.

  • Shelby splits district games...

For the first time in 14 years the Lady Rockets won't make it to the Girls' 8th Region Tournament, but the boys' team will again battle for the 30th District Championship.

The Lady Rockets fell behind in the second half, and couldn't recover as Spencer County's Kenisha Marshall scored nine of Spencer County's 16 fourth quarter points. The Lady Rockets tried to rally with two late 3-pointers, but it was too late as the girls fell 42-38 Wednesday.

Taylor Shaw led the Lady Rockets with 12 points from four 3-pointers.

  • Zimmerman walking away to be AD

After Wednesday’s loss to Spencer County, Sally Zimmerman will step back from the girls’ basketball team to focus on her duties as SCHS Athletics Director.

In seven seasons at the helm of the Lady Rockets, Zimmerman put together very impressive numbers.

She won 69 percent of her games, 149-66, while grabbing three 8th Region titles (2003, ‘06 and ‘07) and playing in at least the region semifinals in five of her six trips.

  • Bulldogs grab 3rd consecutive...

A blowout, a nail-bitter and a comfortable victory added up for Cornerstone Christian Academy’s third consecutive KCAA JV state title on Saturday.

Using a mixture of pressure defense and high-octane, fast-break offense, the younger Bulldogs left the KCAA challengers in their dust yet again and finished the season with a 12-2 record that included two victories over KHSAA teams.

The comfortable triumph came in the championship, when Cornerstone cruised past Community Christian, 55-31.

  • Rockets hammer Spencer, 69-41

The Shelby County Rockets (14-13) drubbed Spencer County (6-22), 69-41, Wednesday in the first round of the 30th District Tournament at Anderson County.

The victory put the Rockets in tonight’s championship game against the host Bearcats.

After roaring out to a 21-point first quarter, the Rockets slowed in the second quarter and carried a 30-21 lead into the half.

  • Rockets look to take shine off...

For the sixth consecutive year Shelby and Anderson counties will meet in the Boys’ 30th District Championship game.

Tonight’s game will tip-off at approximately 7:30, after the conclusion of the Spencer/Anderson girls’ game.

Though the Rockets have won four of the past five – and gone on to capture two 8th Region titles in that time – this year looks to be Anderson County’s best chance to win.

  • Cold-shooting Lady Rockets fall...

Though a 59-32 loss might not be a good sign heading into the postseason, SCHS Coach Sally Zimmerman would disagree.

After the Lady Rockets (9-16) lost by that score at Notre Dame (19-11) Thursday, Zimmerman said she saw a lot of good signs.

"That was one of those games where, based on our record, we weren't really concerned with winning or losing," she said. "We used it somewhat as a practice for Spencer County [in the district tonight]."
