  • Lady Rockets shut out Sayre, 2-0

On senior night, it was two youngsters who provided the Lady Rockets with a 2-0 victory over visiting Sayre.

Freshman Shelby Vogel and sophomore Sarah Robinson scored about midway through the first half, giving Shelby County (9-5-2) the lead over the Lady Spartans (6-8-1).

SCHS Coach Joe Turner changed his lineup for the senior night celebration, playing all the older players the first 20 minutes, before bringing in the underclassmen.

  • OPINION: Players take part in...

As the Rockets get ready to face Male tonight, the day will start differently for a few players.

Junior running back Quinten Cottrell won't be focused on bursting through the Bulldogs' front seven. Junior quarterback Branden Cresap won't be fixated on picking apart the Male secondary, looking for receivers Matt Page and Tavis Elzy.

No, those students, along with a few others, will be busy with more important things this morning.

  • District tournaments get under...

Shelby County High School will be flush with postseason action starting Monday.

Both the school’s soccer teams and the volleyball team will begin play in their respective district tournaments.

The Lady Rockets' volleyball squad has the shortest trip and is the only team SCHS team to earn a No. 1 seeding.

  • Rockets close season strong

The SCHS boys’ soccer team wrapped up its regular season Tuesday by dominating visiting Atherton, 4-1.

John Oakey scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the game, and Sawyer Abshire added a goal with about 18 minutes to play in the first half and the Rockets (9-3-5) coasted the rest of the way.

  • EARLIER: SCHS nips Nelson for...

BARDSTOWN -- Despite several penalties and sloppy conditions, Shelby County held on to defeat Nelson County, 20-16, Friday night.

The downpour ended by kickoff, but the field was saturated, requiring two Spread-oriented teams to get creative.

  • EARLIER: A little luck late...

It was another slow start, and it was ugly, but the SCHS football team beat Eastern, 41-34, Friday for the team's fifth consecutive victory.

It seemed that the football gods were not going to let Eastern lose the game. The Eagles raced out to a 13-0 lead, recovered two Shelby fumbles that gave them a short field to the end zone, caught a tipped pass for a 47-yard TD and seemed to get every break in the game.

  • Rockets hold off Eastern, 41-34
  • EARLIER: Lady Rockets headed...

MIDDLETOWN -- With four of the final groups having finished play, the Lady Rockets were right in the thick of it during a blustery day at the Region 5 Golf Tournament on Monday.

The Lady Rockets trailed Sacred Heart but had a slim two-stroke lead on Oldham County. It appeared that the Lady Rockets wouldn’t defend their region title, but a trip back to Bowling Green and the State Tournament was still in reach.

  • EARLIER: Sophomores aging before...

Most of the time coaches are hoping that sophomores can spell starters, help out, learn and be ready when they’re juniors.

But it’s hard to keep your best players off the field.

Middle linebacker Michael Brooks and cornerback Cedric Hinkle, only sophomores, found their way into the starting lineup at the beginning of the season, and both look like they’ll be starting in Shelby County for a long time.
