  • 'A tale of two halves'

    In a back and forth thriller that went down to the wire, the Shelby County Rockets held off the Hazard Bulldogs, 53-50, at Rupp Arena Friday to advance to the National City/KHSAA Boys' Sweet 16 tournament semi-finals.

    After one half of play, the Rockets looked like they might be in for a long night. The hot hand of Hazard guard Josh Whitaker knocked down 4 of 5 three-point attempts in the half to give Hazard a 30-20 lead at the half.

  • Rockets fall one game shy of...

    Playing in their third game at Rupp Arena in as many days, the Shelby County Rockets fell shy of making the state finals, losing to the Mason County Royals in a semi-finals matchup Saturday, 60-50, in the 2008 National City/KHSAA Boys' Sweet 16 tournament.

    Against a favored Mason County team, the Rockets stayed close throughout the contest, holding the lead for most of the first quarter. Down only 22-19 at the half, the Rockets stayed right on the heels of the Royals until the final minute of the game.

  • Experience the key for Lady...

    The Lady Rocket softball team lost three very valuable seniors from last year's squad, but they return a bevy of talented players looking to advance past last year's 8th Region semifinals appearance.

    "We're very positive, very optimistic and very excited to get started," SCHS head coach Kelly Cable said. "We want to see if we're as good as we think we're going to be."

    The Lady Rockets new mantra this season "Another year older, and another year more experienced," shows at nearly every position.

  • Rockets loaded, ready for...

    The Shelby County baseball team made an improbable run to the state tournament last year, finishing as state runners-up. This year the Rockets look to get one win further.

    First-year head coach Bart Roettger said he believes the 2008 Rockets can make that run.

  • Round one goes to Shelby County

    Fueled by good ball movement and solid rebounding, the Rockets never fell behind Thursday as they blasted past the Lincoln County Patriots, 70-58, and into the second round of the 2008 National City/KHSAA state championship tournament at Rupp Arena.

    Against the bigger Rockets, the Patriots kept the ball outside where they shot 28 three-pointers. But the Rockets expected that game plan and held the Patriots to only nine connections from behind the arch, and most misses were rebounded by the Rockets.

    When the Shelby County boys' basketball team opens Sweet 16 play in Rupp Arena Thursday against Lincoln County at 1:30 p.m. the game may have a familiar look.

    The opponent's jerseys and court will be different, but the Patriots play a style very similar to South Oldham, a team the Rockets beat three times this year.

    Like South Oldham, Lincoln County shoots the three, they shoot it often and they are successful doing it.

    Lincoln County has shot 657 three-point shots, making 217 (33 percent).

  • Loaded Sweet 16 will start,...

    This 2008 edition of the National City/KHSAA Boys Sweet 16 is a star-studded event.

    Several of the top teams and top individuals will be in Lexington starting today, and it gets going fast and furious with the first tip-off. No. 1 ranked Lexington Catholic will face No. 19 University Heights in the opening game at noon today.

    While LexCath is the top team, University Heights has perhaps the top player in Scotty Hopson, a McDonald's All-American and highly-touted recruit.

  • SCHS track season kicks off...

    The SCHS track and field season is set to begin with a home meet Tuesday. The first meet will give both the Rocket and Lady Rocket squads a chance to see just what they have.

    While the Lady Rockets look to rebuild this year with a young squad, the boys' team hopes to build on last season's success while trying to stake claim to the state's toughest region.

    The boys return several pieces from one of their best teams in the last few years. However, the injury bug has already bitten the Rockets before the season has even started.

  • Rockets grab 8th Region Title

    The Shelby County boys' basketball team trailed Gallatin County for 7 minutes and 54 seconds of the fourth quarter in the 8th Region Championship game Wednesday at Gallatin County.

    But Coty Minnis cleaned up a missed shot and drew a foul on the play with just 6 seconds remaining. Minnis calmly stepped to the line and drained the foul shot, giving the Rockets a 49-48 lead.

    When Gallatin County's three-point attempt missed, the Shelby County celebration engulfed the court.

    The rebound and three-point play was Minnis' second inside the final 20 seconds.
