  • Post 37 splits first two games

    The Shelbyville American Legion Post 37 baseball team opened its season over the weekend, losing 12-11 at Danville Saturday and then winning the home-opener against Rockport, Ind. 20-10 Sunday.

    Scoring 31 runs in two games would normally make a head coach happy, but Jim Wiley said he's not content at all with his team's performance over the first weekend.

  • Rockets 2-1 in first passing...

    The Shelby County High School football team lost nearly every skill-position player from last year's squad, so head coach Todd Shipley wasn't sure what to expect from his inexperienced squad.

    The team showed some explosiveness at the first passing tournament of the summer at the University of Louisville Saturday, going 2-1 but failing to advance out of pool play.

    The U of L tournament's rules require that you must be undefeated in pool play to advance to tournament play. With three teams tied at 2-1 and one team at 0-3, no team from the Rockets' pool advanced.

  • Local golfer to play in Women...

    Shelby County golfer Candice Wiley missed out on qualifying for one big tournament this summer, but she picked up on another one.

    Wiley tried to qualify for the Women's U.S. Open, but missed out. However, Wiley did qualify for the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links (Publinx) Tournament to be held June 16-21 at Erin Hills Golf Course in Erin, Wis.

    The qualifying tournament was held a couple of weeks ago at South Grove Golf Course in Indianapolis. In the single-round qualifying tournament Wiley shot a 74, good for second place and one of two qualifying spots in the Publinx.

  • Post 37 kicks off season

    American Legion Post 37 head coach Jim Wiley purposely put together a very tough schedule for his team this year.

    Wiley believed his team would be very strong this season with a crop of successful high school players and a strong group of returning college players.

    However, things can change quickly. Wiley was hesitant to comment on the team's roster, saying instead he has a very strong team on the disabled list.

    "We have a lot of questions already," Wiley said. "I've seen them all play and I haven't been very impressed. Plus, we have several kids hurt already."

  • Rockets fare well at state

    The Shelby County boys' track and field team sent just five participants to the KHSAA State Track and Field Meet at the University of Louisville over the weekend, but the team gave a strong showing in four events.

    Stacey Eden led the way with a fourth-place finish in the 3,200. Eden, a sophomore, finished four spots higher than his eighth-place finish last year.

    "He was very upset, but the fact of the matter is I thought Stacey ran a great race," head coach Jerry Lucas said. "He ran the race he wanted to and was four seconds faster than he had run all year."

  • County, Stoner settle defamation...

    The county has settled a defamation suit with former professional baseball player Mike Stoner.

    Stoner had sued fiscal court, the parks board, the former parks' baseball council and a member of the council alleging racial slurs and drug references were aimed at him and his now-defunct baseball instruction business, Stonebreakers.

  • Lady Rockets fall 4-0 in title...

    The Lady Rocket softball played Anderson County for the sixth time, with the final one Thursday in the 8th Region championship game. The Lady Rockets got two during the regular season, but Anderson completed the postseason sweep with a 4-0 win to claim the 8th Region Championship, just a week after topping the Lady Rockets 1-0 in the 30th District title game.

    The Lady Bearcats got all the work done early, putting up four runs on five straight hits in the first inning.

  • Small SCHS state team has lots...

    The SCHS boys' track team will compete in just four events at the class 3A state meet today and Saturday at the University of Louisville, but they are loaded with potential.

    The team has entries in two running events -- the 3,200-meter and the 4x800 relay -- and two field events -- the shot put and discus -- but head coach Jerry Lucas said he likes his team's chances in their events.

    "In all four events that we're entered in we have a shot to do well, and that's exciting," he said. "I think we're going to be right in the thick of it with all four."

  • Lady Rockets rally into regional...

    It took a few innings, but the Lady Rockets finally got things rolling in the 8th Region Softball Tournament at Oldham County Monday.

    The Shelby County girls fell behind early, and needed all seven innings before finally taking the lead in the seventh on the way to an 8-5 first-win over Henry County.

    The Lady Rockets got behind 4-0 after two innings, but started chipping away with two runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth and sixth innings. But Henry County still held a 5-4 lead going into the seventh. That's when the Lady Rockets finally opened up.

  • Henry County trips up Rockets in...

    The SCHS baseball lost its bid for a third straight 8th Region crown Monday when host Henry County upset the Rockets in the opening round of the region tournament.

    Shelby County jumped out to a 4-0 lead when Clay Minor and John Hunter picked up RBIs in the first inning, and Hunter and Daniel Davenport picked up RBIs in the second. The four-run outburst knocked Henry County's starting pitcher from the game.
