  • Leading by example: Sanders...

    Olivia Sanders knows talent. She knows that the Lady Rockets have plenty of it this year.

    What she doesn't know is when it's all going to fit together.

    "We have so much youthful talent, but we just haven't harnessed it yet," she said. "But once we all get on the same page, I think we can beat most of the teams in the state."

    That's where Sanders comes in.

    Head coach Joe Turner said Sanders and fellow senior captain Anna Whitlow have taken the leadership role and run with it.

  • Rockets start learning curve

    The Shelby County football team's offense won't look much different than last season, but the faces are completely different.

    With just one player returning at a skill position -- and even he's switched to a different position - there are a lot of questions to be answered. Those questions started Friday in the team's first live scrimmage at Nelson County.

  • Trinity upends Rockets 3-0

    First year boys' soccer coach B.J. Andriot thought his team had a very good chance to beat Trinity in the opening game of the SCHS boys' Soccerama Saturday.

    However, Trinity had a different idea.

    The Shamrocks scored twice in the first half and added another in the second to beat Shelby County 3-0.

    Andriot said he thought his team came out timid.

    "I think maybe we were a little scared in the first half, but we settled down in the second half," he said. "We didn't play our best, but the loss was probably better for us in the long run."

  • Eden searching for titles,...

    Winning the regional and placing sixth at the state meet as a sophomore wasn't enough for Stacey Eden.

    Even battling that state meet last November while still recovering from strep throat for that sixth place finish wasn't enough.

    No, Eden, now a junior, won't rest until he's crowned state champ, and he's also set his sights on the school record.

  • Solinger looks to lead

    For her senior year Janelle Solinger is looking for a first.

    Solinger has run cross country for four years, and one would think that she had seen and done it all but that's not the case.

    In her four years she has yet to take a full team of Lady Rockets to the state meet, but she's aiming to change that this year.

  • Boys' golf team opens strong

    The Shelby County boys' golf team opened its season Saturday with a sixth-place finish out of 20 teams in the Meade County Invitational at Doe Valley Golf Course.

    Rocket head coach Myron Montgomery said he was very pleased with the team's finish, especially considering the competition at Doe Valley.

    "That's a tough course to start the year on, and it was a really strong field," he said. "Actually, I think we could've done better -- we left a lot of strokes out there."

  • Rocket soccer drops LexCath 1-0

    The Shelby County boys' soccer team is gaining confidence by the day, and the season hasn't even started yet.

    The Rockets played their first preseason scrimmage Thursday, topping Lexington Catholic 1-0 on the road.

    "I didn't think we were great, but the guys kept fighting and fighting and didn't let (Lexington Catholic) have anything easy," first-year head coach B.J. Andriot said.

    A late switch in the team's formation to strengthen the team's midfield made the difference. Andriot added a midfielder and the Rockets started to take control.

  • Junior steps up role for Lady...

    Keyshia Patterson didn't start playing volleyball until she was in the seventh grade at West Middle.

    "I didn't know very much about it, but I just wanted to play," she said. "It looked like fun."

    Now, four years after starting at West, Patterson, a junior, has become central to the Lady Rockets' success - she will be the team's captain.

    "She's our key right now," head coach Felicia Pace said. "She matches the play on the other side of the net, and she's a very aggressive player."

  • A surprise honor: Wiley joins...

    Jim Wiley was excited for the late Bobby Stratton to be inducted into the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame Thursday before his team took the field in the state tournament.

    And he knew that "some other guy" was being inducted as well.

    He also noticed that some of his old players were in attendance, and that both his sons were there with their families.

    "They just told me they came down to watch the games," he said. "I didn't really think much of it. It's the state tournament, and a lot of people just come down to watch."

  • Lady Rockets start season strong

    The Shelby County girls' golf team started the season with a hot swing.

    The girls opened the year with the Lady Rocket Invitational on Saturday at Weissinger Hills and fought their way through a strong field for a third place finish.

    Senior Candice Wiley led the charge, finishing with a 5-over par 77 and in 10th place out of 95 individual players, but it was the play of the team behind her that pushed the Lady Rockets up the chart.
