  • Cornerstone opens 2-0

    The Cornerstone soccer team opened play this week, winning two games at home.

    Despite having just more than enough players to play, the Bulldogs are coasting early with a 5-0 win over AIE on last Thursday and a 2-0 win over Frankfort Christian Tuesday.

    First-year CCA head coach Sara Barber said she was impressed with her team.

    "I thought they did very well and played as a team," she said. "With not having subs (against Frankfort) I expected them to get worn out, but they just kept going."

  • Lady Rockets split two at...

    The Shelby County girls' soccer team had a rough start to the season, falling 4-0 at Eastern and 7-2 at Mercy, but head coach Joe Turner said he sees things turning around.

    The girls played North Hardin in the first game of the Lady Bearcat Tournament on Monday, and despite a 2-0 loss Turner was happy.

    "We outplayed them and out-shot them, but we just couldn't score," he said. "We hit the post numerous times. It easily could've been a 4-2 win for us, but we couldn't get the ball in the net."

  • Rockets slip past Lafayette

    The SCHS football team wrapped up the preseason with a scrimmage against Lafayette Friday at Daniel Field.

    The Rockets won 26-23 in a game that was tight throughout.

    The 26 points was a good sign because Shelby County had just one returning starter --lineman Matt Axline -- playing on offense, and were missing two starters -- lineman Matt Spencer and receiver Matt Page.

    Branden Cresap completed nearly 60 percent of his passes and threw for four touchdowns -- hitting Ben Axline twice for scores, Zay Harris and Tavis Elzy once.

  • SCHS volleyball wins two straight

    The Shelby County girls' volleyball team improved to 2-2 on the season with wins over Anderson County and Henry County.

    The girls topped Henry 2-1 Monday (21-15, 25-15, 27-25).

    "It was a 'W,' but I was a bit disappointed with the level of play," SCHS head coach Felicia Pace said. "We had more attacking than Henry but couldn't find enough power to put it to the floor. Our passing had moments of complete breakdown, but we were able to hang in there enough to take the match."

    Pace said consistency is all she's looking for from the girls.

  • Lady Rocket golfers getting hot

    The Shelby County girls' golf team started the season with four straight top three finishes and they have only continued to get better.

    The Lady Rockets turned that hot start into their first win of the season, taking home the title in the Central Hardin Invitational on Aug. 16. The girls then whipped Scott County by nine strokes in match play on Aug. 19. Then at Mt. Sterling Golf Course over the weekend the Lady Rockets shot their lowest team score ever -- a 334 -- finishing second in the Montgomery County Invitational.

  • Looking on from the back: Shuck...

    With a new coach comes questions, but SCHS boys' soccer team's defense was never in doubt.

    "Bradley is just an awesome player," first year head coach B.J. Andriot said. "He has tremendous skill, and he's a leader on the field."

    Shuck anchors the Rockets' defense, using his long frame to clear balls in the air, and his speed to run down players that slip through the middle or on the wings.

  • Leading by example: Sanders...

    Olivia Sanders knows talent. She knows that the Lady Rockets have plenty of it this year.

    What she doesn't know is when it's all going to fit together.

    "We have so much youthful talent, but we just haven't harnessed it yet," she said. "But once we all get on the same page, I think we can beat most of the teams in the state."

    That's where Sanders comes in.

    Head coach Joe Turner said Sanders and fellow senior captain Anna Whitlow have taken the leadership role and run with it.

  • Rockets start learning curve

    The Shelby County football team's offense won't look much different than last season, but the faces are completely different.

    With just one player returning at a skill position -- and even he's switched to a different position - there are a lot of questions to be answered. Those questions started Friday in the team's first live scrimmage at Nelson County.

  • Trinity upends Rockets 3-0

    First year boys' soccer coach B.J. Andriot thought his team had a very good chance to beat Trinity in the opening game of the SCHS boys' Soccerama Saturday.

    However, Trinity had a different idea.

    The Shamrocks scored twice in the first half and added another in the second to beat Shelby County 3-0.

    Andriot said he thought his team came out timid.

    "I think maybe we were a little scared in the first half, but we settled down in the second half," he said. "We didn't play our best, but the loss was probably better for us in the long run."

  • Eden searching for titles,...

    Winning the regional and placing sixth at the state meet as a sophomore wasn't enough for Stacey Eden.

    Even battling that state meet last November while still recovering from strep throat for that sixth place finish wasn't enough.

    No, Eden, now a junior, won't rest until he's crowned state champ, and he's also set his sights on the school record.
