  • EARLIER: Lady Rockets top Barren...

Shelby County made 10 of 12 foul shots down the stretch Tuesday night to defeat Barren County, 56-44, and advance to the championship game of the Max Performance Lady Rocket Invitational.

The victory started with assertive play at both ends of the court in the first half. Shelby trailed, 7-6, early in the first quarter when Marissa Raisor stole the ball and made a layup to take back a lead the Lady Rockets would not relinquish.

  • New banners, new Hall of Fame...

While 2009 left Shelby County with new banners in the SCHS gym, more state titles and more Hall of Fame members; the biggest headlines came from one that left us and another that's joining us.

While the Rocket family said goodbye to former Mr. Basketball and University of Kentucky star Mike Casey (see Those we lost in 2009), SCHS will say hello to - and make room for - the Martha Layne Collins High School Titans in 2010.

  • Buzzer-beater dooms Shelby

WINCHESTER - Cardinal Vinny Zollo banked in a three at the buzzer to defeat Shelby County 52-49 Friday night.

The Rockets (11-4) trailed George Rogers Clark 47-42 with 3:30 to play in the fourth, unable to stop strong center Corey Rogers to open the quarter. But Shelby's quick transitions took Clark by surprise, and regained the lead with a Darryl Hicks layup. Then Rogers fought his way to the basket to tie the game at the 1-minute mark.

  • Eastern tops Shelby 46-42

Shelby County couldn't mount a comeback against visiting Eastern, losing 46-42 Saturday night.

The Lady Rockets' poor shooting, both from the field (12 of 48) and at the line (12 of 26) did more damage than the Eagles. Shelby played with as much scrappy intensity and speed as Eastern (8-6).

Down by 10 points at halftime, Shelby spent the second half whittling the deficit. They came within three points of Eastern twice within the final minute of the game, on a Leeara Cardwell free throw and then again on a Shayla Bolin free throw.

  • Saturday game and fundraiser a go

The girls basketball teams host Louisville Eastern Saturday night. Junior varsity plays at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7:30.

The chili super and silent auction will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. The chili supper is in the high school cafeteria, $5 for a meal. The silent auction will be held in the lobby, with winners announced during halftime of the varsity game. All proceeds benefit the girls' program.

  • Shelby carries early lead to...

Shelby's tenacious full-court press led to a 20-point lead at halftime, which the Rockets (11-3) carried to a 74-56 win against visiting Western Hills (7-6) Tuesday night.

The game was at times sloppy -- 20 plus turnovers for each team -- but Shelby maintained a controlled offense except for a lapse midway through the second half. The Rockets' lackluster play going into the fourth quarter let the Wolverines within 12 points. Then Shelby's aggressive play emerged again, and the Rockets pulled ahead.
