  • SCHS falls, 4-0, to No. 17...

    SCHS Coach Joe Turner said he's not sure why, but every time his girls' soccer team faces a talented squad its focus is solely on defense.

    "We have trouble against talented and skilled teams because they [his players] just want to fall back and play defense," he said. "We just pack in the back and don't get out on offense at all."

    That's exactly what happened on Monday as the Rockets (9-7-1) fell 4-0 to visiting Anderson County (15-2-1, ranked No. 17 in the state).

  • Rockets fall to 0-5

    The SCHS football team stayed with Manual through the first half, but couldn't stop the Crimsons in the second half.

    Manual got on the board quickly in the first quarter. The Crimsons intercepted a Shelby County pass and returned it to the Shelby County five-yard line, punching it in on their first offensive play.

    Manual scored again on the opening play of the second quarter, taking a 14-0 lead.

    A 56-yard pass from Matt Page to Tavis Elzy helped get the Rockets on the board in the second quarter. The pass set up a 25-yard Matt Nakatani field goal.

  • Rocket girls tie No. 8 South...

    The SCHS girls' soccer team withstood an onslaught of shots from South Oldham late in the second half Wednesday to come out all even at 1 after 80 minutes.

    The tie was like a victory for the Rockets (9-6-1) after they were outshot, 25-1, and visiting South Oldham (11-3-2, No. 8 in the state) took 13 corner kicks.

    "They just punched us in the mouth over and over again," SCHS Coach Joe Turner said. "I told them we could bend, but we couldn't break, and that's what our defense did. That, and Laura Metcalf was absolutely phenomenal in the goal."

  • At last Rockets get long awaited...

    It's already October, but the Shelby County High School football team will play its first home football game tonight when DuPont Manual visits Robert Doyle Stadium.

    "It's great to finally be at home," SCHS Coach Todd Shipley said. "If I had my choice, we'd play every game at home."

    Not having to board a bus is a big plus for the Rockets (0-4), but that doesn't mean much to Manual (3-1, No. 7 in the state and No. 5 in Class 6A in The Courier-Journal's Litratings).

  • East's physical play...

    After 10 years, East Middle School stood up and punched rival West in the mouth Tuesday.

    Well, at least on the football field.

    The Missiles (9-0) controlled the line of scrimmage on offense and defense with a steady running game and a high-pressure pass rush to beat West for the first time in 10 years, 36-14.

    Both teams entered the game undefeated and looking to win the regular-season title in the Mid-Bluegrass Conference, but East's defense took over late in the second quarter after West (8-1) had cut its lead to 16-14.

  • Sometimes kids teach us about...

    Sportsmanship is a fickle thing. Sometimes, doing the right thing can have awful repercussions.

    That nearly happened to Michaela Manley during the Lady Rockets' victory in the Girls Region 5 Golf Tournament on Monday.

    Manley finished her round with an 82, but she didn't realize that she had signed a scorecard that gave her an 81.

    That turned a runaway for the Rockets into a 1-stroke victory and almost cost Shelby County a region title.

    But Manley did the right thing: She pointed out the mistake and took the requisite disqualification.

    That takes a lot guts.

  • Lady Rocket golfers take first...

    Candice Wiley finished with a 1-under par 71 to win the individual title, but Shelby County's girls golf team needed Madison Thomas' 99 to take the team title in Monday's Region 5 Tournament at Weissinger Hills Golf Course.

    It appeared that the Lady Rockets would coast to the title with Wiley's strong showing, which included her first hole-in-one, leading to a 333-352 lead over second-place Sacred Heart.

  • Cardinals wear down Rockets, 40-9

    Shelby County High School's football team hung tough as long as it could Friday before Scott County's relentless rushing attack took over and led the Cardinals to victory, 40-9.

    The Rockets (0-4, 0-1 District 8) scored the game's first nine points and held that lead through the first quarter before Scott County (3-1, 1-0) took control of the game.

    "We were very, very competitive for the first half and much of the third quarter," SCHS Coach Todd Shipley said.

  • SCHS tabs Zimmerman as new AD

    SCHS girls' basketball coach Sally Zimmerman got the call of a lifetime Friday when she was picked by the school to run its athletics department.

    "The tradition here is pretty amazing, so to be the one picked to oversee that and keep it going is something special," she said. "Just one day in, and I already have a regional championship [with the Lady Rockets' golf title Monday]."

  • SCHS girls win regional behind...

    Though star Candice Wiley shot 71 -- including her first-ever hole-in one -- the Shelby County High School girls golf team won its regional Monday at Weissinger Hills on the back of its No. 5 player.

    Wiley's 1-under-par took medalist honors, and with No. 2 player Michaela Manley having posted an 81, the Rockets appeared to be winning in a rout.

    But Manley reported that she accidentally had turned in an incorrect score -- she actually had shot 82 -- which required her to be disqualified.
