  • Sharks bursting onto state,...

    The Shelby Sharks are off to a hot start in the winter short-course season.

    The team already has one swimmer qualified for the Southern Sectional. Amanda Skinner hit the qualifying mark for the 200-meter breaststroke at the Excel Meet of Champions in Brentwood, Tenn., this past weekend.

    Sharks Coach Jeremiah Heath also thinks his team can have more swimmers qualify for meet.

  • A dream come true

    Since he was a little boy going to watch the University of Louisville baseball team, Jarred Clarkson says he has known he wanted to be a Cardinal.

    On Wednesday he made that dream come true, signing his National Letter of Intent to play for U of L next year.

    “It’s a great feeling, to now have the opportunity to wear that uniform is extraordinary,” Clarkson said after his signing ceremony at SCHS.

    Oddly enough, it was the University of Kentucky that helped Clarkson know his decision was right.

  • Rockets to face Oldham for third...

    SCHS Coach B.J. Andriot wasn't happy with his team's play against Oldham County in the 16th District title game last week, a 2-0 loss. But Andriot knows his team will be better when it meets host Oldham County at 7 p.m. today in the 8th Region Tournament championship.

    "The deal this time is lose, and you go home," he said. "I know these guys don't want to go home, so they'll be ready. This team, when they play with the intensity they had [Monday] against CAL, can hang with anybody."

  • SCHS sweeps Woodford County meet

     

    The Shelby County boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams swept the first-place honors at Saturday’s Woodford County Invitational in Versailles.

    Both the Rockets and Lady Rockets took a weekend off the previous week, gaining a chance to train hard as the season winds down.

    It appeared to pay off for both teams, as Shelby County had several runners at the top of the race.

  • Rockets fall to Oldham, 14-9

    The SCHS football team played one of its better games of the year Friday, but came up short to a talented Oldham squad, 14-9.

    The Rockets led 6-0 at halftime on a Nigel Beach one-yard score and moved ahead 9-0 in the third quarter on a 24-yard Matt Nakatani field goal in the third, but the Colonels had an answer.

    Oldham scored after the Rockets muffed a punt return in the third, and then took the lead in the fourth when they scored after another Rocket fumble.

  • Powder Rough?

    Powder Puff football is one of the homecoming traditions throughout the South.

    I remember watching the games when I was in high school. Girls in eye-black and mouth guards, high school players as coaches.

    Good times, good times.

    But Tuesday’s annual Senior vs. Junior showdown a SCHS didn’t have the usual good-natured feel.

    No, rowdy coaches and aggressive girls got the game called off late in the second half with the seniors ahead, 13-0.

  • Longtime SCHS coach going to...

    Roland Dale coached track and field at SCHS for 27 years and cross country for 26. He had All-state runners and individual state champs, his teams finished third at the state in both sports, but he didn’t expect this.

    Last week Dale found out he was being inducted into the KHSAA Hall of Fame for track and cross country at a banquet Saturday in Lexington.

    “You know, you’re always surprised when your peers consider you for an honor like this,” he said.

  • Rockets eyeing South Oldham for...

    The Shelby County Rockets will have what looks like its best shot at a victory this season when South Oldham visits Robert Doyle Stadium tonight.

    Both teams are 0-8 on the season, and SCHS Coach Todd Shipley said that's all the more reason the Rockets must remain focused.

    "We can't take anybody lightly," he said. "South Oldham is doing the same thing we are -- 'We're playing Shelby County, so this is our best chance to get a win.' I'm more concerned about the little things we're doing that keep hurting us."

  • Former Rocket named to all-...

    Centre College senior and former SCHS Rocket Neil Murphy has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District football team by the College of Sports Information Directors of America.

    Murphy, who was named to the District 4 College Division Second team, is a two-year starter at defensive tackle for the Colonels and has posted a 3.65 GPA in a double-major of anthropology and sociology.

    Murphy has been on the Dean’s List three times and has been on the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll three times.

  • Rockets’ season ends...

    Early on, the game had all the makings of an upset.

    A little scuffle before the game had Shelby County fired up, the Rockets hit a big pass play for a quick, early score, and the game was close, 17-10, as the first half wound down in Shelby County’s first-round playoff game at Male High School on Friday.

    But the Bulldogs asserted themselves quickly and advanced to second round with a 59-31 victory over the Rockets.
