  • Rockets struggle, fall at Boyle...

    At just 2-9 going into Tuesday's game, Boyle County didn't look like a team that would cause the Rockets much of a problem.

    However, a quick look at the beginning of the seasons says a lot.

    Boyle County's football team, which has several basketball players on it, advanced to the 4A State Championship game, and many of those players are just now hitting their basketball strides.

  • Rockets go for two in a row

    The SCHS football team will try to put back-to-back victories together tonight after finally getting their first last week.

    The Rockets (1-8) will face Oldham County (7-2) in the annual grudge match, but this year the Colonels seemingly have the upper hand.

    After starting the year 1-2, Oldham County has reeled off six consecutive victories by an average of 29.3 points. In its seven victories Oldham has averaged 48 points, but in its two losses, against St. Xavier and Madison Central, the Colonels scored just six points.

  • Lady Rockets shoot for state

    Last season Shelby County’s girls’ cross-country team missed qualifying for the state finals by a single point.

    When a competition is that close, the difference between advancing and being sent home comes down to seconds and strides.

    After a year of thinking about the loss, the Rockets are looking at the regional qualification meet this Saturday to make up for lost time, settle some scores, and send the team to state meet for the first time since 2001.

  • Rockets look to unseat Trinity...

    The Shelby County boys’ cross-country team faces a tough task Saturday at the regional meet.

    But it’s not Seneca Park’s 5K course. Instead, it’s trying to unseat No. 1-ranked Trinity.

    “They’re going to be very hard to catch,” SCHS Coach Randall McDowell said. “Their top five all run under 17 [minutes], and their top three are in the low 16s. There is a reason they are ranked No. 1 in the state.”

  • Late interception sinks Rockets

    The SCHS football team came up short again, falling, 28-6, at Madison Central Friday in a District 8 showdown.

    Trailing 21-6, the Rockets (0-8, 0-3) had a chance to pull within one score of the Indians (7-1, 2-1) early in the fourth quarter. Shelby had moved the ball to the Madison Central 30-yard line, but Madison Central’s third interception of the game ended the drive. The Indians then went 78 yards for the final score.

  • Karas takes second at region

    The Shelby County girls' cross-country team just can't seem to get over the hump.

    For the third consecutive year the Lady Rockets finished fifth as a team in the Region 4, Class 3A meet. The top four teams advance to the state meet.

  • Cornerstone turns in banner...

    The Cornerstone Christian Academy volleyball teams put together a season for the ages.

    From middle school to junior varsity through varsity, the Bulldogs lost just one regular-season game, amassing an incredible 44-1 record.

    The middle school team went on to win the tournament title in its league at Whitefield Christian in Louisville and to finish undefeated, the JV team placed second in the KCAA State Tournament, and the varsity squad won the regional and placed third at state.

  • Rockets run by South Oldham for...

    One trick turned into a big treat for the Rockets on Halloween, as Shelby County abandoned the passing game completely in a 62-7 whipping of visiting South Oldham.

    The Rockets have lived on the arms of their quarterbacks the last few years, but they threw just one pass (an incompletion) while compiling 487 yards and nine touchdowns in the team's first victory of the season on Homecoming night Friday.

  • Oldham slips past Shelby, 14-9

    The Rockets seemed to do nearly everything right on Friday.

    They forced punts, they stuffed Oldham County's potent offense, they controlled the clock and moved the ball, but they still came up short.

    Oldham County scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 36-yard run with 6:40 to go and held on for a 14-9 victory over the host Rockets.

  • Big numbers fill void for...

    For years the one big problem facing the Shelby County swim team has been the size of the team.

    The AquaRockets have had the quality but not the quantity to match up with some of the region's bigger teams. But that could change this year.

    "We are just blessed this year with about 60 kids," SCHS Coach Sheron Ruble said. "We've had an influx of kids wanting to cross train between sports, and several cross-country runners have come out because they want to eventually do triathlons."
