  • Rockets come up short again

    The Shelby County Rockets just can't get over the hump.

    Shelby (7-11) rallied from a 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit and had a chance to win the game late, but came up short again in a 62-60 loss at Grant County (13-6) Tuesday.

    The Braves were the eighth team this season to beat the Rockets by five points or fewer.

  • Simon Kenton rolls past Lady...

    A hot Simon Kenton start buried the Lady Rockets in the first quarter Saturday, and the Shelby girls’ couldn’t dig out, losing, 73-57.

    The host Pioneers (13-4) raced out to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Lady Rockets (7-9) finally put a dent in the lead in the fourth quarter. Trailing 55-36, Shelby outscored Simon Kenton, 21-13, in the fourth quarter.

  • Gramig to play for Tigers

     As of Wednesday, Shauna Gramig can focus on the upcoming softball season.

    Gramig, a senior catcher for the Lady Rockets, won’t have to worry about her college career, because she took care of that by signing her letter-of-intent to play for the Georgetown College next season.

  • Cheering from the top

    For the first time since 2006 the SCHS cheerleading squad will be heading back to the state competition.

    The girls won the 8th Region small varsity competition Saturday at SCHS, and Coach Heather Fallen said it was a long time coming.

    “It’s been a big year for us as far as preparation,” she said. “We’ve been practicing hard since June, and we set some pretty high expectations.”

  • Defense comes up short against...

    Shelby County's Cache Tomlinson came out scorching hot for the Rockets, but Shelby's defense couldn't contain the Dragons (7-9) as the Rockets (7-10) fell, 73-68, on the road Saturday.

    Tomlinson, in his third game back from an ankle injury, lit up the Dragons for a season-high seven 3-pointers on his way to 25 points.

    "Cache was hot all night, and our offense was good," SCHS Coach Mike Clark said. "But we just didn't get the stops we needed in the third and fourth quarters.

  • Rockets drop another close one

    The Shelby County boys’ basketball team continued its string of close losses, falling, 68-64, to visiting Franklin County Tuesday.

    The Rockets are now winless in 2009, but each loss has been by four points or less.

    “It would be frustrating if the team were not playing extremely hard and executing our game plans,” SCHS Mike Clark said. “We played another very good team but just came up short.”

  • Mr. Basketball: Mike Casey

    Mike Casey wasn't born as an 8-year-old boy in Clark's Station, but that's where his story began. The gangly kid who rose faithfully at 6 a.m. to encourage a bleary-eyed neighbor to stop wasting their summer. The four-boy baseball and football games that started at daybreak and ended only when anxious mothers called through the darkness for their young athletes or explorers or cowboys in the Brush Run Valley along Highway 148.

  • Clark County slips past Rockets

    The Shelby County boys' basketball team blew a 16-point, third-quarter lead Saturday, falling, 61-59, to visiting Clark County.

    The Cardinals (12-3) rallied to take the lead after outscoring Shelby 27-10 in the third quarter.

    The Rockets (6-8) battled back, grabbing a 3-point lead, 59-56, with 1:20 to play. But Clark County wouldn't stop. Robbie Stenzel was fouled while shooting a 3-point shot and hit all three free throws to tie the score at 59.

  • Remembering Mr. Basketball:...

    When the banners are unveiled and the applause dies down, Terry Davis will again be remembered as Kentucky’s 1968 Mr. Basketball.

    “It’s nice to be remembered 41 years later,” he said. “Mr. Basketball gives you an identifying mark in this state. I don’t know how many times since then that I’ve been introduced as 1968’s Mr. Basketball.”
