  • Cold-shooting Lady Rockets fall...

    Though a 59-32 loss might not be a good sign heading into the postseason, SCHS Coach Sally Zimmerman would disagree.

    After the Lady Rockets (9-16) lost by that score at Notre Dame (19-11) Thursday, Zimmerman said she saw a lot of good signs.

    "That was one of those games where, based on our record, we weren't really concerned with winning or losing," she said. "We used it somewhat as a practice for Spencer County [in the district tonight]."

  • Rockets look for repeat against...

    We saw the preview just 15 days ago, when Shelby whipped Spencer County, 65-49, on the road, and now the main attraction tips off tonight at 7:30 at Anderson County.

    Shelby and Spencer will battle to see who will face host Anderson County in the championship game Friday at 7:30.

    Though the Rockets seemed to coast through much of the second half of that victory on Feb. 10, SCHS Coach Mike Clark thinks focus will be the key tonight.

  • Rockets rally past St. Xavier

    Despite having made just 2 of his previous 10 free throws, Donovan Johnson calmly sank one with 6.8 seconds remaining Friday to give the Rockets (13-13) a 43-41 victory over St. Xavier (13-12).

    Johnson’s free throw followed an off-balance runner in the lane that put the Rockets ahead for the first time since a 34-33 lead nearly six minutes earlier.

  • Spencer is no pushover

    On Jan. 5 it came down to 3 seconds and one point.

    So when the Lady Rockets (9-16) and Spencer County (13-11) tip off tonight at 6 in the first round of the Girls’ 30th District Tournament at Anderson County, you can expect another close, hard fought game.

    “This is the best Spencer County team I’ve seen,” SCHS Coach Sally Zimmerman said. “They have all the tools necessary to do well in the postseason.”

  • Rockets slip past St. X

    Shelby County's Donovan Johnson drove hard to the rim with 6.8 seconds left in the game. After his shot bounced around the rim and fell, the Rocket gymnasium erupted. Johnson then nailed the free throw, putting Shelby ahead of St. Xavier 43-41 Friday.

    But the Rockets still had to hold on and watch a St. X 3-pointer bounce off the rim as time expired. The win moved the Rockets to 14-14, and secured a six-game win streak to carry into the playoffs, which start next week at Anderson County.

  • Seasons looking better than as...

    The basketball season locally looked bleak not long ago. Actually, it looked downright dismal.

    But throw a recent winning streak in there, and despite the chilling temperatures, the outlook has improved.

    The 30th District Tournaments are just around the corner. Both Anderson County teams will tipoff play against Eminence on Tuesday in Lawrenceburg, and Shelby's boys and girls will face Spencer County on Wednesday.

    There's not a lot of drama for Tuesday.

  • Rockets ease past E-town

    The SCHS boys’ basketball team took control early Friday and held off visiting Elizabethtown (9-14), 70-57.

    The Rockets (11-13) extended that lead throughout the second half.

    “I was very pleased with our offense,” SCHS Coach Mike Clark said. “We had exceptional passing, and we shot well from the free-throw line, especially late in the game.”

  • Rockets hold off Madison Central

    Looking all season for that marquee moment, Shelby County came about as close as it could to achieving that on Tuesday night, whipping visiting Madison Central, 60-49.

    The Indians (15-10) started the season strong, winning nine of their first 10 games, and their 13-3 record midway through January included victories over top-10 teams Jeffersontown and Clark County.

    Although Madison Central has struggled closing out the season, it remains a team to be reckoned with in the powerful 11th Region.

  • Bulldogs hammer Portland, 93-37

    The Cornerstone Christian Academy boys’ basketball team is rolling through the end of its regular season.

    The Bulldogs hammered visiting Portland Christian, 93-37, Tuesday to push their winning streak to five games and their record to 16-5.

    In fact, the Bulldogs are so hot they’ve won the past three games by an average of 52.7 points.

  • Coaches, parents can learn from...

    From Korey Stringer of the Minnesota Vikings in 2001 to two high school players in the Louisville area more recently, heat-related deaths have unfortunately become more frequent in the past decade.

    With 15-year-old Max Gilpin of Pleasure Ridge Park’s death during preseason practice last summer, a new era has been opened.

    Gilpin's coach, David Jason Stinson, has been indicted on charges of negligent homicide, which could land him in prison for up to five years.
