  • East beats West again

Another week, another last-minute victory for East Middle over rival West.

This time, however, it was in the district tournament opener, and East won, 30-22, with the same sort of late heroics that had given the Missiles a 26-20 victory last week.

Missiles quarterback Britton Woolwine completed a touchdown pass with 1 minute, 33 seconds to go to seal the victory, but the offense was led by running back Trenton Lafollette, who rushed for three touchdowns.

The old adage “a good defense is the best offense” has taken on a new meaning for the Collins High School football team, which handily defeated host North Bullitt on Friday night, 41-13, in a Class 4A District-4 contest.

The Titans (6-1, 3-1) broke open a tight game in the second half as their defense scored twice and set up a third touchdown against the Eagles (3-3, 1-1), who managed only 20 total yards of offense after the intermission.

The Rockets won for the second time in three games, routing Jeffersontown, 7-1, Wednesday on senior night.

The 2010 school year began a new rivalry in Shelby County, but a very old rivalry, one as old as many residents can remember, took place Tuesday night at Collins Stadium, where East and West middle schools met for the first time this millennia away from Robert Doyle Stadium.

And this time East won, 26-20, when Missiles quarterback Britton Woolwine engineered a game-winning drive that ended with a 29-yard laser pass to Trenton Lafollette for a touchdown with 37.5 seconds to play.

  • SCHS: Hudgens takes advantage of...

When senior standout Logan Forrest was shelved with a shoulder injury in the first quarter of the Shelby County High School football team’s opener on Aug. 20, sophomore Jacob Hudgens received an immediate message: Welcome to the big leagues.

Hudgens vaulted from back-up to starter at both linebacker and offensive guard for the Rockets, whose roster already was depleted by the split to a two-school system that yielded the new Collins High School.

  • Boys regional golf: Collins 10th...

Shelby County and Collins had a tough time of it during the boys Region 6 Golf Tournament at Nevel Meade Golf Course in Prospect on Tuesday, but the team that finished farther up the standings actually felt better about the outcome.

Collins finished 10th in the tough field, shooting 332 for the 18-hole event.

    SCHS was 17th with a 387.

Christian Academy Louisville won with 306,  and St. Xavier (307) also qualified for next week’s State Tournament.

The Class 6A Eagles (4-2) scored on their first three possessions as the Class 4A Rockets (0-7) couldn’t contain the 1-2 punch of senior wingback Jon Davis, who scored three touchdowns, and junior quarterback Tanner Evans, who threw for three TDs.

  • High-powered Cresap ready for...

Branden Cresap is analyzing his future as a college quarterback much like he does when dropping back to pass for the high-powered Collins High School football team: He’s considering all his options.
