  • Barry hopes to clear last hurdle

It has been quite the athletic year for Michael Barry.

Barry, a senior at Shelby County High School, was statistically one of the top wide receivers in Class AAAAA for the Rockets’ resurgent football team last fall.

He was the leading scorer on a boys' basketball team that won as many games this past winter as it did the previous two combined.

Then, last week he won regional titles in both the 110-meter hurdles and the pole vault for Shelby County’s track & field team.

  • SCHS team wins opener

The Shelby County boys’ doubles duo of Doug Martin and Jeron Russell won their first-round match at the KHSAA State Tournament on Thursday.

Martin and Russell beat Bowling Green’s Noah Flener and Brandon Lee, 6-2, 6-2, in a match that began at Lexington’s Shillito Park but ended indoors. Martin and Russell led, 4-2, with an advantage in their court in the first set when play was suspended because of lightning.

  • Each team will make its pitch...

Next week’s 30th District baseball tournament is wide open, according to Shelby County Coach Bart “Rudy” Roettger, despite the fact that the 4-team field includes two ranked teams.

“I have said all year, any team in the 30th District is capable of not only winning the district but the Eighth Region [as well],” said Roettger, who is in his sixth season on the job. “This is, by far, the strongest this district has been since I have been here. So it should be fun starting next Tuesday.”

  • Rivals get ready to meet

When the Collins and Shelby County softball teams meet Monday in the 30th District Tournament semifinals, both coaches want something different from their teams.

First-year Titans Coach Suzanne Cates doesn’t want her team to be overconfident, and long-time Rockets Coach Kelly Cable just wants her team to be confident.

  • Doubling their teamwork is key

It’s rare for opponents or emotions to get the better of Doug Martin and Jeron Russell.

That’s one of the major reasons why Martin, a junior for Shelby County junior, and Russell, a freshman, will play doubles in the KHSAA Tennis Tournament, which begins Thursday at the University of Kentucky’s Boone/Downing Tennis Complex.

Martin and Russell are about as even-keeled as they come on the tennis court.

  • One round finished, the next to...

Candice Wiley closed one chapter of her life Saturday, but she already is beginning another.

Wiley, a Shelby County High School alum and former state champion golfer for the Rockets, graduated from the University of Louisville less than a month after completing her collegiate career for the Cardinals.

Wiley walked with her classmates during the ceremony at the KFC Yum! Center, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Education and Human Development.

  • Tough times on the road for...

The road hasn’t been kind to the Collins baseball team recently.

The Titans, who are ranked No. 11 in a pair of state polls, topped host Christian Academy of Louisville, 7-4, on Thursday but lost, 3-1, at Lexington Catholic on Saturday and, 5-4, at South Oldham on Monday.

COLLINS 7, CAL 4:Thanks to some timely hitting and a strong relief effort from a freshman, the Titans rallied from an early, 3-1 deficit to beat the Centurions (17-14).

  • Titans finish 2nd in softball...

In between a loss last Thursday and a victory Monday night, the Collins softball team sandwiched a second-place finish in Jeffersontown’s Lady Chargers Classic during the weekend.

The Titans lost, 8-0, at Anderson County on Thursday then won their first two games in J-town’s tourney, beating Ryle, 7-3, and Owen County, 5-0, before falling to Sacred Heart, 13-2, in the championship game Saturday.

Collins bounced back from that defeat by trouncing Trimble County, 11-6, Monday.

  • Buddies Ashton, Lingle sign with...

Devin Ashton and Zach Lingle said they enjoyed being teammates on the Shelby County football team so much that they’re going to do it again for the next four years.

The seniors both signed Thursday in the school’s library to play football for Campbellsville University.

“My best friend [Ashton] was going there, and it’s really close to where I live, plus it’s a big teaching school,” Lingle said of the key factors in his decision.

  • Little hit backs big pitching

A player nicknamed “Giggles” helped the Collins baseball team get the last laugh  – and the only run – Wednesday night against its crosstown rival.

Sophomore Paul Miller’s run-scoring single in the top of the fifth inning was the difference in the Titans’ 1-0 triumph over Shelby County in a key 30th District game – as well as one between two Top 25 teams – at the Shelby County Athletic Complex.
