Shelby County Judge-Executive Rob Rothenburger confirmed Thursday night that he would be seeking the Republican nomiation for state Agriculture Commissioner in 2011. He had announced on his Facebook page earlier Thursday evening that he would eschew a run for the governor’s office in 2011 and instead seek the office being vacatedf by Richie Farmer. The campaign trail for the 20th District Senate seat stopped in Shelbyville on Tuesday, when candidates David Eaton and Paul Hornback spoke to the Shelby County chapter of the Home Builders Association of Louisville.

The candidates were given 10 minutes to speak, and that was followed by a brief question-and-answer period from a crowd of about 30.

Hornback, a Republican, was born and raised in Shelby County and, after two years in the banking industry, became a farmer in 1977. He now farms 2,000 acres for a variety of crops.

Late in 1988, Dad died at the age of 98. In concentrating on my remarkable mother, I don’t want to overlook Dad, a handsome, hard-working Hollander whose devotion to me as his adopted child was exceptional.

It will conclude Friay and Saturday at the A. L. Birch Amphitheater in Clear Creek Park. It stars Smith’s granddaughter, Katie Hisle, and is directed Kathi E. B. Ellis. One day in early 1918, Florence, while serving with the Women’s Royal Air Force (WRAF) at Fowlmere, Cambrideshire, England, cycled out to nearby Duxford Air Field, then being used by the American Expeditionary Force.

Here she came across Sergeant Anton W. Van Stockum, a native of Holland, also cycling, who, after emigrating to the United States, had volunteered for the U. S. Army Air Corps.

On Jan. 7, 1916, Sgt. Reginald Bareham, the man my mother, Florence, had married, sailed for France with his regiment to do battle in the first World War.

On April 20, he was presented with a “Card of Honour” by the Major General commanding the division for his "Gallant leading of night patrols during March and April [1916]” against the Germans.

Paul, Conway run away with Shelby

Rand Paul’s romp to the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate got a big boost in Shelby County, and the county helped state Attorney General Jack Conway surge ahead early on the Democratic side.
These two-horse races had been called close at times, but that didn’t pan out in Shelby or elsewhere in Kentucky – at least as far as Paul was concerned.
