One round finished, the next to...

Candice Wiley closed one chapter of her life Saturday, but she already is beginning another.

Wiley, a Shelby County High School alum and former state champion golfer for the Rockets, graduated from the University of Louisville less than a month after completing her collegiate career for the Cardinals.

Wiley walked with her classmates during the ceremony at the KFC Yum! Center, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Education and Human Development.

Sanders, Titans walk to victory

A walk-off walk gave the Collins baseball team its first district title.

Spencer County pitcher Austin Heilman walked Dan Sanders on four pitches to bring home Nate Clifton in the bottom of the seventh inning and give the Titans a 4-3 victory over the Bears on Wednesday night in the 30th District Tournament final at the Shelby County Athletic Complex.

Next week’s 30th District baseball tournament is wide open, according to Shelby County Coach Bart “Rudy” Roettger, despite the fact that the 4-team field includes two ranked teams.  

“I have said all year, any team in the 30th District is capable of not only winning the district but the Eighth Region [as well],” said Roettger, who is in his sixth season on the job. “This is, by far, the strongest this district has been since I have been here. So it should be fun starting next Tuesday.”

Shelby County sees big tourism...

Shelby County raked in nearly $78 million in tourism money in 2012, an increase of 9.2 percent over 2011, based on an annual statewide survey.

“That’s money for tourism and travel expenses,” said Katie Fussenegger, executive director of the Shelby County Tourism & Visitors Bureau. “That goes to hotels, shopping, restaurants, gasoline purchased by travelers and other places. The state has a formula they use that’s based on a number of visitors we provide.”

Ex-correctional officer’s...

James Johnson, a correctional officer with the Kentucky Correctional Institute for Women in Pewee Valley, who was charged with sexual abuse of inmates last summer, next will appear June 17 for a status conference in Shelby Circuit Court.
Johnson had been scheduled to appear today before the schedule changed.

Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Melanie Carroll had said last fall that she expected Johnson to make a plea agreement with her office, but that arrangement has not materialized.

SCHS students at conference

Twenty-five of SCHS’s Talented and Gifted leaders attended the Girls Lead the Way Conference in Louisville on March 20. The girls selected a variety of sessions to attend. Other sessions included classes in financial planning, dressing for success and emotional intelligence. The keynote speaker was Dominique Dawes, who was the first African-American girl to medal in gymnastics at the Olympics. Students participating were (from left) Lauren Dale, Claire Dale, Kim Tharpe-Barrie and Rachel Dove.

Barry hopes to clear last hurdle

It has been quite the athletic year for Michael Barry. 

Barry, a senior at Shelby County High School, was statistically one of the top wide receivers in Class AAAAA for the Rockets’ resurgent football team last fall.

He was the leading scorer on a boys' basketball team that won as many games this past winter as it did the previous two combined. 

Then, last week he won regional titles in both the 110-meter hurdles and the pole vault for Shelby County’s track & field team.

3 more sign college grants

A trio of high school student-athletes signed earlier this week to continue their academic and athletic careers.

Shelby County senior Nathan Hayes signed Monday to play baseball for St. Catharine College, Shelby County senior Samantha Orange signed Tuesday to play women’s soccer at Kentucky Christian University and Collins senior Nate Clifton signed Wednesday to play baseball for Milligan (Tenn.) College.

An overpowering storm of fear

Tell the truth: If you are a parent, you thought twice about sending your child to school on Tuesday morning.

You looked at the satellite images of the approaching weather system that had laid waste to miles and miles of homes in Oklahoma. You looked at the darkening skies in the west. You thought about families whose children were huddled in a school not built to withstand the right cross from nature’s most fearsome force.
