Students from Collins High School collected items for care packages to Pvt. II Joshua Whittle and his platoon in Afghanistan with the National Guards. Whittle graduated from CHS last year. Bekaert Corp. in Shelbyville became involved by being a community partner with the PLTW (Project Lead The Way) engineering program, in which Whittle took three classes. Bakaert will sponsor the senior service project by providing help during the event as well as providing pizzas for the senior celebration afterward.

Underage drinking ordinances

Thank you for your recent article informing residents about the social host ordinance for Shelby County   (“Adult hosts of teen parties my be fined,” May 20). Providing information regarding this ordinance will hopefully begin a conversation among adults and youth on the harms associated with underage drinking.

I absolutely do not approve of killing bees. In fact, we are in a bit of a crisis with a diminishing population with the suspected cause being the use of pesticides, notably neonicotinoids.

I do not fear bees, I am not allergic, and I can happily co-exist – except that they are eating my house.

Or, rather, they are tunneling into the wood that makes up my house so they can lay eggs and have lots of babies.

Simpsonville man honored  by investment industry group

Todd P. Lowe, a resident of Simpsonville, has been honored by the organization that sets the standards for the international investment industry.

Lowe, president and founder of Parthenon LLC of Louisville, was among six investment professionals honored by CFA Institute for their contributions to the industry and the organization.
