A steamy Sunday afternoon in early August, 1963. Crosley Field, the old baseball park in Cincinnati, and the Pirates are in town to play the Reds in that long lost treasure called the “Sunday doubleheader.”

Both stories appeared in the same position on the front page of the daily newspaper. The headline sizes were about the same, the impact of the stories nearly identical.

So it takes no degree in journalism to determine that editors believed each story to be almost equal in “weight” with the other. After all, any story at the top of a front page of an American newspaper is deemed to be important simply by geography.

Yet these two stories were hardly identical, hardly equal and hardly of the same importance.

A small group of women who attended a self-defense class at the extension office Tuesday night may not have come away with a black belt in martial arts, but they may have learned something that could save their lives in the future, organizers of the class said.

“It was a really hands-on class, and I feel sure that everyone who was there walked away feeling more confident about their self-protection,” said Elizabeth Pulliam, executive director of Shelby Prevention.

Shelby County Drug Court officials, including Circuit Court Judge Charles Hickman, were on hand Thursday to congratulate two Shelby County men who graduated from drug court after nearly two years of participation.

Thomas Graft and Mike Reid, both of whom say they have college plans, entered the program in the summer of 2011 and have worked diligently since then, performing 40 and 63 hours of community service, respectively, and have been involved in many different kinds of charitable services.
