The Shelby County baseball team ended last week with a victory and a tie.

The host Rockets routed Simon Kenton, 11-0, thanks to a 3-run second inning, an 8-run third and a solid effort from Tyler Eades Thursday night at the Shelby County Athletic Complex. 

Shelbyville City Council: City...

The Shelbyville City Council held a first reading Thursday for the 2013-14 city, and that will require a sight tweak this week before a final consideration.

The council will have a special called meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday to add the potential revenue from a grant it hasn’t been awarded.

SCHS doubles team earns state bid

FRANKFORT – Doug Martin and Jeron Russell earned their first State Tournament berth, while Paige Kregor was one victory away from her third in a row.

Martin and Russell, a junior and a freshman, respectively, at Shelby County, won a three-set quarterfinal thriller in the 8th Region boys’ doubles tournament Tuesday at Franklin County to earn a spot in next week’s state tourney at the University of Kentucky. The Rockets’ tandem, seeded No. 3, trounced their first two foes, giving up only one game.

The Shelby County Board of Education will recognize students who have qualified for the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP) during Thursday’s regular meeting, which will be at Heritage Elementary School, 8300 Frankfort Road.

Vendor issues take K-PREP off...

On top of Monday’s safety issues at Collins High School, Shelby County Public Schools already had made a quick change to its K-PREP testing, which also began Monday.

The district was forced to alter its testing situation because of an issue with ACT, which is the vendor for the end-of-course testing.

Shelby County was one of several districts statewide that were scheduled to begin testing online this year. However, ACT began having issues with its online test and by Friday temporarily had suspended online testing because of technical issues.

Women’s self-defense class small...

A small group of women who attended a self-defense class at the extension office Tuesday night may not have come away with a black belt in martial arts, but they may have learned something that could save their lives in the future, organizers of the class said.

“It was a really hands-on class, and I feel sure that everyone who was there walked away feeling more confident about their self-protection,” said Elizabeth Pulliam, executive director of Shelby Prevention.

Hornback optimistic for federal...

After helping lead the charge for policy change on industrial hemp in Kentucky, state Sen. Paul Hornback (R-Shelbyville) took his campaign to Washington D.C., last week, and returned expressing optimism about what he heard there.

 “It went really well,” he said of the trip. “Of course we met with all of our congressional representatives and also with representatives from the Department of Energy, Department of Agriculture and [the] Obama administration. The lady we met with at the Department of Energy was actually even wearing a hemp dress.”

Beshear approves exchange to expand health insurance

Calling it “the single-most important decision in our lifetime for improving the health of Kentuckians,” Gov. Steve Beshear on Thursday announced the inclusion of 308,000 more Kentuckians in the federal Medicaid health insurance program.

Beshear said announcing the expansion that, together with the creation of the Health Benefit Exchange, this would ensure that every Kentuckian will have access to affordable health insurance.

NOTE: Chris Hauck, a former resident of Shelby County, was one of the participants in the memorial jam concert on Saturday to honor late former music teachers Ernie Threlkeld, Susie Saunders and Mel Owen. He wrote this on the Facebook after Threlkeld’s passing last fall. Hauck shared it for publication.

 

We’ve missed the story here

Both stories appeared in the same position on the front page of the daily newspaper. The headline sizes were about the same, the impact of the stories nearly identical.

So it takes no degree in journalism to determine that editors believed each story to be almost equal in “weight” with the other. After all, any story at the top of a front page of an American newspaper is deemed to be important simply by geography.

Yet these two stories were hardly identical, hardly equal and hardly of the same importance.
