Doubling their teamwork is key

It’s rare for opponents or emotions to get the better of Doug Martin and Jeron Russell.

That’s one of the major reasons why Martin, a junior for Shelby County junior, and Russell, a freshman, will play doubles in the KHSAA Tennis Tournament, which begins Thursday at the University of Kentucky’s Boone/Downing Tennis Complex.

Martin and Russell are about as even-keeled as they come on the tennis court.

A good hair day

Melissa Hunter spoke to first-graders in Sylvia Starkey’s class at Southside Elementary about being a hairstylist. Hunter, a Shelby County High School graduate, explained what schooling was required and why she loves her job. As a homework activity, Hunter gave each child, like Andre Moore, a worksheet that challenged them to draw hairstyles to match the photos of celebrities like Justin Bieber. Hunter was among about 30 people who participated in the school-wide Career Day.

2 Shelby students on dean’s list...

Two Shelby County residents were named to the dean's list at the Savannah College of Art and Design for fall quarter 2012. Full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or above for the quarter receive recognition on the dean's list were Zachary Lyons of Waddy and Chelsea Strobl of Shelbyville.

Gallagher named to dean’s list...

Connor Gallagher of Simpsonville was named to Eckerd College's dean's list for the fall 2012 semester. The dean's list is compiled following the fall and spring semesters and includes students who completed at least four courses with a grade point-average of 3.75. Connor is majoring in marine science.

Engagement: Mershon-Dale

Rende and Candace Mershon of Frankfort announce the engagement of their daughter, Katy Mershon, to Jesse Dale, the son of Kenny and Beth Dale of Stover, Mo.

She is a graduate of Shelby County High School and University of Kentucky and works with Veterans United Home Loans in Stover.

He is a graduate of Morgan County R-1 High School and University of Central Missouriand works with Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

State recognition

Cornerstone Christian Academy seventh-grader Aidan Barbour received state recognition and an invitation to the academy for summer studies through the Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program). Aidan earned the award by scoring at or above the national average of recent high school graduates on at least one part of the ACT or SAT.

Rovers open season against...

The Rivers City Rovers, the Premier Development League men’s soccer team that will play its home matches at the Shelby County Athletic Complex, opens its regular season at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Rovers will host Forest City London from Canada, the defending PDL champs.

“This is an extraordinary event,” Rovers Coach Muhamed Fazlagic said in a press release. “The Rovers are only three years in the PDL, and already we are opening the season against the national champions!”
