Job Corps center to conduct statewide recruiting event

A statewide recruitment fair for potential students will be conducted later this month at the Whitney M. Young Job Corps Center near Simpsonville.

Lots of summer camps, awards

Now that the high school spring sports are officially over, a summer full of camps, workouts, all-star games, etc. is under way.

Here is a quick look at some of the upcoming and/or recent activities involving teams, or athletes, from Shelby County:

My 2-part series has been expanded to four parts. In the first two parts of this narrative, I have described my wonder, as a young Marine second lieutenant, upon visiting the East Coast for the first time.

Upon my completion of officer training and indoctrination at the Marine Basic School in the Philadelphia Navy Yard in May 1938, I traveled to my next duty station, the USS Tennessee, a battleship then anchored off its home port, San Pedro, Calif.

Relay for Life teams grow in Shelby County

Much like this year’s summer blockbusters, the 2013 Relay for Life of Shelby County is shaping up to be bigger and better than the year before with its theme of “Lights, Camera, Cure.”

The event featuring food, a parade and movie-themed costume contest will begin at noon on Saturday at Shelby County High School.

As of Tuesday, 35 teams have registered for this year’s event and in the process have raised more than $31,000 and counting for the American Cancer Society.

WHAT WE THINK: Shelby County's outlet mall needs to succeed

The spats and the horror now can be put behind us, and it’s time for all of us to unite and focus on the next big thing in our community:
An outlet mall is being built in Simpsonville.

That’s not news, we realize – certainly not to those homeowners who will live in proximity to this 374,000-square-foot enterprise – but the truth of the matter is that the opening next year of the Outlet Shoppes of Louisville creates an important milestone in the evolution of our Shelby County.

Four seniors graduated from the 2013 Cornerstone Christian Academy. They were (from left) Josh Woodward, Victoria Fries, Ashley Hamblin and Jack Douglas. Woodward was valedictorian.

9 preteens compete at Shelby County Fair

The Miss Shelby County Pre-Teen contest is at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Shelby County Fairgrounds.

A contestant must be 8 years old by June 30 and not have reached her 13th birthday by Oct. 31. Five finalists will be chosen, from which a winner and first runner-up will be chosen from the standpoint of beauty, poise and personality.

3 teen contestants compete at Shelby County Fair

Shelby County girls will compete Tuesday in the Miss Shelby County Fair Teen pageant. The winner will compete in the Miss Teen Kentucky County Fair pageant. The contestants are judged on beauty, poise and personality.

Big inning is nice beginning

LEXINGTON – The Collins baseball team picked a fine time for one of its biggest innings of the season.

The Titans’ 6-run second inning – their largest single-inning output in more than two months – propelled them to a 6-4 victory over Tates Creek on Monday night in the first round of the 2013 KHSAA State Tournament at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

MY WORD: Some thoughts on the Moore Tornado

“Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next.”―Gilda Radner

The tornado that struck Moore, Okla., -- and those that followed in other nearby towns – remind us again that life is uncertain. I find it nearly impossible to comprehend the pain and loss those people are enduring today, especially the parents of the lost children.
