Monroe gets new court date on manslaughter charges

A man charged with manslaughter in a 2011 crash received a new court date of July 1 during a disposition hearing Monday in Shelby County Circuit Court.

Lonnie Monroe, 45, of Shelbyville originally was arrested Sept. 24 by Kentucky State Police and charged with murder in a tractor-trailer accident from November 2011 in which a passenger in his truck was killed. On Oct. 4, that charge was amended to second-degree manslaughter, which is a Class C felony that carries a penalty of 5 to 10 years in prison.

Engagement: Mershon-Dale

Rende and Candace Mershon of Frankfort announce the engagement of their daughter, Katy Mershon, to Jesse Dale, the son of Kenny and Beth Dale of Stover, Mo.

She is a graduate of Shelby County High School and University of Kentucky and works with Veterans United Home Loans in Stover.

He is a graduate of Morgan County R-1 High School and University of Central Missouriand works with Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

‘Downton Abbey Era’ show coming to public library

Downton Abbey Era: Titanic to the Twenties will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Shelby County Public Library. “Regency High Tea” will begin at 6 p.m. sharp, and the Lexington Vintage Dancers will be at 6:30 p.m. Downstairs the servants practice the Grizzly Bear and the Foxtrot.

Upstairs Lady Violet accepts an invitation to waltz. Learn about how the era was reflected in the social dances of the time. (No one will be admitted after dancers begin to perform.)

Lane closure tonight just east of Shelbyville on westbound I-64

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 5 Office advises motorists of  that the right lane of westbound Interstate 64 in Shelby County will be closed between mile points 35 and 36.  This lane closure is scheduled for Monday, May 13 from 6:30 p.m. until midnight.  KYTC crews will be performing pavement repairs.

Shelby County residents were among the students recently receiving degrees from the University of Louisville.

2 Shelby students on dean’s list at Savannah

Two Shelby County residents were named to the dean's list at the Savannah College of Art and Design for fall quarter 2012. Full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or above for the quarter receive recognition on the dean's list were Zachary Lyons of Waddy and Chelsea Strobl of Shelbyville.

Shelby students at Purdue

Purdue University awarded about 3,300 degrees to students following the fall semester. Among those was Joseph Newton of Shelbyville, who earned a bachelor of science degree.

Gallagher named to dean’s list at Eckerd

Connor Gallagher of Simpsonville was named to Eckerd College's dean's list for the fall 2012 semester. The dean's list is compiled following the fall and spring semesters and includes students who completed at least four courses with a grade point-average of 3.75. Connor is majoring in marine science.

Shelby students earn EKU scholarships

Hundreds of incoming freshmen and transfer students have accepted merit-based scholarships to attend Eastern Kentucky University. Local recipients include:

Shelby County High School graduate Ashley Lynn Frank of Shelbyville has accepted a Music Department Scholarship.

Shelby County High School graduate Haley Vidal Shepherd of Shelbyville has accepted a Music Department Scholarship.

Shelby students receive awards at Campbellsville

Shelby County residents were among students at Campbellsville University who received awards at Honors and Awards Day.
